Lets Breathe Easier. Vote for a smoke-free
Austin. Vote early through May 3 or on Election
Day, Saturday, May 7, 2005.
As a member of the faith community, I call upon
Austin residents to vote to protect everyone from
the dangers of secondhand smoke. All people are
valued and equal and everyone should have the
right to breathe clean air. Ed Calahan, Agape
Baptist Church Secondhand smoke causes health
problems in non smokers similar to problems
caused by smoking. African American and Hispanic
workers are less often protected from secondhand
smoke in their workplace so, we are hit hard
because we work long hours breathing in other
peoples smoke. I am concerned about workers and
thats why I am voting for the smoke-free
ordinance and ask you to do the same. Former
Austin Mayor, Gus Garcia Fewer than 25 of
people smoke, yet everyone is exposed to
second-hand smoke. Requiring smoking to be
outside or on a patio will reduce second-hand
smoke in Austins restaurants, bars, bowling
alleys and indoor live music venues. Mary Lou
Adams, PhD, RN, FNP
