Introduction
  • In April of 2002, CHEP USA Contracted with Amware
    Pallet Services to Establish 13 Full-Service
    Pallet Sortation and Manufacturing Facilities
  • CHEP is the global leader in pallet and container
    pooling services managing the daily movements of
    over 200 million pallets and containers in 38
    countries world-wide
  • In addition to the many operational
    considerations, a major challenge was to recruit
    highly talented and motivated associates to meet
    each facilitys production schedules
  • Also involved was establishing a National
    Management Team to develop processes which would
    facilitate the management and day-to-day support
    of each facilities operation

  • to develop and implement a recruitment plan that
    would allow for the successful hiring of the most
    qualified applicants and designing a stringent
    orientation and training program for each
    new-hire so to ensure our success by warding-off
    high turnover
  • Constraints
  • Satellite Facilities Must Operate as Independent
    Strategic Business Units (SBUS)
  • A National Implementation Team Has to be
    Established to Facilitate Each Start-Up Operation
  • 7 Employment Position Levels Have to Be Filled at
    Each of the Locations
  • Criteria for Success
  • Standardize the Start-Up Process Including Hiring
    and Training Practices
  • Prevent Employee Turnover by Maintaining Moral,
    Training, and Benefits
  • Manage an Incredibly Accelerated Timeline

Solution
  • Designated a Single Training Facility for Each
    Candidate Employee to Learn First-Hand During an
    Intense Two Week Training Program
  • Developed a Formal Training and Certification
    Program for All Positions Interviewing, Hiring,
    Orienting, and Providing OSHA Standardized
    Training
  • The Start-Up Team Would Hold Job Fairs in the
    Selected Cities to Recruit the Necessary
    Personnel to Support that Operation
  • Once Hiring Decisions were Made, New Employees
    were Given an Initial Orientation, Trained for
    their Specific Role, and All of Their Paperwork
    was Completed and Submitted to the Proper Offices

  • ALL 13 LOCATIONS WERE STAFFED AND OPERATING
    WELL-WITHIN THE AGGRESSIVE TIMELINE !!
