PNEUMOCOCCAL ANTIGEN DETECTION IN URINE
  • A study done between June 2001 October 2002
  • The Aga Khan Hospital and Getrudes Garden
    Children Hospital were involved .
  • A rapid testing kit manufactured by Binax of
    USA was used.
  • Test is based on immunochromatography and takes
only a few minutes to complete.
  • Requires only a few drops of urine.
  • All other requirements are provided in the kit.
  • Expensive 20USD/test.

5
EVALUATION OF THE KIT
  • 100 urine samples from well baby clinic (with no
H/O fever in the past 8 weeks) were tested. One
sample tested positive 1 false positive.
  • 100 samples from healthy blood bank donors were
tested after they were found fit to donate. All
    tested negative.

6
PNEUMOCOCCAL ANTIGEN DETECTION IN URINE CONTD
  • 150 urine samples from children admitted with
febrile illness were tested. 21 samples tested
positive. All patients had urine, sputum/throat
swab, and blood cultures performed. There were 8
culture isolations of pneumococci from these 21
patients which were all from respiratory
    specimens.

7
PNEUMOCOCCAL ANTIGEN DETECTION IN URINE CONTD.
  • 200 samples from adult patients admitted with a
diagnosis of pneumonia, febrile illness and
meningitis were tested. Patients were mostly
from medical wards and 30 from I.C.U.
  • 43 samples tested positive . There were 16
culture isolations of pneumococci from these
    patients.

8
CONCLUSION
  • A large number of pneumococcal infections are not
    diagnosed by routine clinical microbiology
    procedures.
  • Diagnosis could be improved tremendously if
antigen detection tests were used in addition to
    culture techniques.
