Outline
  • Visual Displays
  • Sharp Corporation's TFT 3D LCD
  • Audio Displays
  • Haptic Displays

3
Visual Displays
  • Stereoscopic visual display
  • Autostereoscopic display
  • Specially designed lenticular screen
  • Eliminating the need for wearing special headgear
  • No limitation of users movement
  • Real-time interactive stereoscopic wall-size
    display

4
3D Display Products
  • 3D display without the need for special glasses
  • Switches between 2D and 3D display mode

5
Stereopsis Theory
  • If two images were presented, one to each eye,
whereby the perspective difference was the same
as that normally viewed by each eye
independently, then the brain would fuse these
two images and interpret this as an image with
    visual depth.

7
Original technology of 3D display
  • Using a high refresh rate CRT monitor and 3D
    glasses
  • Computer generates two different perspective
images and sends each image to the CRT
    sequentially
  • The 'wrong' eye is blocked from seeing an image
    by glasses

8
Sharp 3D display
  • Two images are displayed concurrently
  • The display uses revolutionary switchable
parallax barrier technology to ensure each eye
only sees one of these images
  • The parallax barrier is a series of vertical
slots which are carefully designed to focus
    pixels in different directions

Summary
  • The Parallax Barrier is placed between the LCD
and the backlight and can be switched on and off
  • Without glasses and objects appear to leap out of
    the screen
  • Need appropriate software

13
Audio Displays
  • Present sound regardless of which the display is
    placed
  • Tracked headphones
  • Conjunction with projection VR system
  • Transparent speakers

14
Other techniques
  • Sonic rendering
  • Physically based sound-modeling algorithms
  • Echo cancellation
  • For large-screen immersive spaces

15
Haptic Displays
  • Tactile sensation
  • Allow the Participant to sense different surface
    textures or object edges
  • Array of small pins
  • Array of miniature electrodes
  • Temperature display
  • Minimal effort in developing but could create a
    compelling experience
