Title: DISPLACEMENT AND VELOCITY

1
DISPLACEMENT AND VELOCITY
  • The length of a strait line drawn from an
objects starting point to its end point

2
Displacement
  • ?XXf-Xi where delta X is the total displacement
and Xf final position Xi initial position
  • Is not always to the distance traveled
  • Can be positive or negative

3
VELOCITY
  • The displacement divided by the time interval
(time interval is always positive) ?t tf-ti
where delta t is the time interval and tf final
    time ti initial time.
  • SI unit is meters per second (m/s)
  • Not the same as speed speed has no direction
whereas velocity has both speed and direction.

4
TERMS
  • Scalar a value without a direction
  • Vector a value with a direction
  • Average velocity (v with a bar over it) the
total displacement divided by the time interval
    during the displacement
  • Instantaneous Velocity the velocity of and
object at a specific time along its path

5
Terms cont
  • Instantaneous velocity is the slope of a line
tangent to the point on the velocity curve.
