The Muscular System (p. 87)
  • There are over 600 muscles in the human body
  • Muscles can only pull (not push) therefore they
    must work in pairs
  • When one muscle contracts (shortens) it pulls on
a bone the paired muscle must relax so it does
    not tear

9
Types of Muscle
  • Three types
  • Skeletal muscles that connect to bones and
    allow movement
  • Smooth muscles that make up parts of internal
    organs (ex. Esophagus and stomach)
  • Cardiac muscles of the heart

10
I need a volunteer!!
Thank you, you just showed us how some muscles
work.
11
Muscle Control
  • Some muscles are under your control, others are
    not
  • Voluntary muscles are ones which you control
their movement (ex. Arms, legs, mouth)
  • Involuntary muscles work without you having to
make them (ex. Heart, diaphragm, etc.)

12
Striated vs. Non-striated
  • Striated means striped and is the type of
muscle found in strong muscles throughout the
body (Skeletal muscles and cardiac muscles
  • Smooth muscle is non-striated because it often
works in a wave-like motion called peristalsis.
