2
Introduction
  • Northumbria University is accredited by the
Training and Development Agency for Schools
(TDA). This means that the University is
allocated a number of TDA funded places for
    which it is responsible.
  • currently the University is supporting both
    primary and secondary training
  • the GTP is a very competitive route into teaching
  • primary applications must be submitted by the end
of November 2005 and early application is advised

3
Entry Requirements
  • trainees must be graduates - preferably with good
    grades
  • trainees must have grade C or above at GCSE in
English, Mathematics and (for primary) Science
although alternatives such as the HEFC
quantitative methods module may be acceptable
  • identified candidates will be interviewed in
    school
  • the GTP is designed for mature students who have
prior experience in schools or are changing
    career.
  • trainees must be self motivated and well
organised as well as having good communication
skills and be able to provide evidence of
    effective team working.

4
What is the GTP?
  • it is an employment based route into teaching
  • trainees are paid on the unqualified teacher
    scale
  • for TDA funded places schools are paid 13,000
towards the trainees salary costs. Trainees MUST
be supernumerary ie in addition to normal
    staffing
  • self-funded places may also be available to
support trainees to obtain QTS. Schools must
agree to pay the trainees salary and also fund
the training costs through a payment to the EBR
  • for TDA funded trainees a training grant is paid
to Northumbria EBR and this funding is shared
equally between the university and the school.

5
Who should apply?
  • The GTP is designed primarily for candidates with
    considerable school experience or individuals
    wishing to change careers
  • Applications are encouraged from under
represented groups in teaching - men in primary
    teaching, individuals from minority ethnic
    groups, people with disabilities.
  • Most funded TDA places are allocated to
  • Secondary priority subjects science (preferably
    the physical sciences), mathematics, modern
foreign languages, ICT, RE, music and design and
    technology.
  • A limited number of TDA funded places are
    allocated to
  • General Primary applications -These places are
    for high quality primary applications
  • A few other secondary subjects - high quality
secondary applications in Art and PE
  • Self-funded places may be available in other
    subject areas
  • Note All TDA funded Primary as well as secondary
Art and PE places are VERY oversubscribed and
successful applicants tend to be supported by
    lead schools previously connected with
    candidates.

6
Application process
  • Identified schools are contacted by EBR
  • an advisory visit is made by the EBR to school if
not an existing partner school to check on
quality of resources to support training and
    understanding of GTP procedures
  • all suitable candidate information is sent to
    school
  • on request additional information is sent to
school using the electronic version of
    application form
  • school identifies candidates for interview and
the EBR programme administrator organises and
informs candidates and schools of arrangements

7
Interviews
  • interviews take place in schools
  • university and school staff must be present on
    the interview panel
  • candidates have to complete a maths and English
    task at interview
  • standardised interview questions are used
  • feedback from the interview panel is considered
by the admissions committee who make
recommendations about whether the candidate is
accepted and if this is for a TDA or self funded
    place.

8
Induction
  • candidates and schools are informed of the
    decision by the admissions committee
  • an initial needs assessment is carried out
typically during a two week period in school in
    May
  • strengths and gaps in trainees knowledge are
    identified
  • a training plan is produced by trainee and school
training co-ordinator with the support of
university based training sessions and resources
  • trainees then begin to address subject knowledge
requirements prior to September enrolment and
begin storing and organising evidence in files
  • usually the GTP is a one year programme
    incorporating university and school based
    activities supported by regular tutorials
  • In order to gain QTS trainees need to show that
they have met ALL the standards identified in
    Qualifying to Teach

9
QTS Requirements
  • 'Qualifying to Teach', the Standards and
Requirements for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
must be met by all trainees
  • assessment is based on authentic evidence
organised in files and referenced using a Record
    of Professional Development
  • training takes place in school and the university
using an individualised training plan produced
following an initial needs assessment usually
this is done via a two week placement in May
  • quality assurance systems ensure assessment and
training is rigorous. Ofsted inspect providers.
  • trainees must have experience of teaching in at
    least two schools
  • assessment of teaching is across two consecutive
    Key Stages.
