SHOCK
  • Precursor to death
  • Prompt recognition, treatment, control are
    crucial for survival
  • Occurs when circulatory system fails to send
    blood to all parts of body
  • Characterized by
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Reduced blood circulation
  • Inadequate blood flow to tissues
  • Result is damage to parts of the body such as
    limbs, heart, lungs brain

Types of SHOCK
  • Hemorrhagic Shock loss of blood from an injury,
    internal or external
  • Respiratory Shock lungs are unable to supply
    enough oxygen to the blood, caused by disease,
    illness, or pulmonary contusion
  • Neurogenic Shock loss of vascular control by the
    nervous system
  • Psychogenic Shock physiological response to
    fear, stress, or emotional crisis ,and causes a
    person to faint

  • Cardiogenic Shock caused by inadequate
    functioning of the heart
  • Metabolic Shock occurs when there is severe loss
    of body fluids
  • Anaphylactic Shock caused by a severe allergic
    reaction
  • Septic Shock life-threatening reaction to severe
    infection

Signs Symptoms of Shock
  • Restlessness anxiety
  • Weak rapid pulse
  • Cold clammy skin
  • Profuse sweating
  • Face that becomes pale cyanotic around mouth
  • Shallow respirations
  • Thirst
  • Nausea vomiting
  • Blood pressure that drops slowly steadily
  • Loss of consciousness

Care Treatment of Shock
  • Maintain clear airway
  • Control all bleeding
  • Elevate extremities 12 inches
  • Splint fractures elevate if well stabilized
  • Avoid rough excessive handling that may cause
    further injury
  • Prevent loss of body heat
  • Keep victim in supine position, or semi-reclining
    position (chest pain)
  • Do not give any food or drink EVER
  • Measure record vital signs every 5 minutes
  • Constantly reassure victim
  • Call 911 immediately.
