UF Pharmacy Programs Basic Facts
2002 The Library orientation consisted of
two hour long lectures which were videotaped
Lecture was taped from back of the lecture hall
Students complained that the quality of the
video was poor and they could not see the
screen captures making them hard to comprehend as
demonstrated by their questions when
completing the associated class assignment
Monitored course discussion board as well as
fielded email questions Librarian Liaison
went to remote sites that do not have libraries
onsite 2003 The orientation consisted of
two hour long narrated PowerPoint presentations
Students commented that they were too long
It was hard to retain material presented
Others did not watch them because of the length
(this was demonstrated by the
questions asked by students by email and on the
courses discussion board) Kept the Borland
Library Librarians posted as to changes in the
course Sent them copies of the online
tutorials and related search assignment They
have an orientation for Jacksonville students
Librarian Liaison monitored discussion list
questions regarding library related
assignment 2004 Through this past fall the
Library Orientation included A brief 10
minute introduction to all 300 incoming
students 31 modular tutorials - Each
tutorial is 3 to 7 minutes long - General ones
are used for both this and the WPPD program -
They cover available services in addition to
databases and using the Librarys
resources - Tutorials are linked directly to
course website and the HSCLs Distance
Learning Site - Created PDF handouts to answer
some frequently asked questions - Borland
Library has an orientation for Jacksonville
students 2007 In the Fall Semester, a new
course coordinator redid the course which
includes the Library Orientation
Tutorials linked to the Course website Search
assignment moved to the end of the semester from
the start Google Docs document containing a
list of resources and databases is linked to
the Course Website Future possibilities

Petersburg/Clearwater LibGuide Library Guide
linked directly to all course sites and Liaison
page LibGuide linked to all course websites
- Pre 2003 No formalized Library instruction
- Liaison librarian answered reference and
technology questions - Students frustrated and not prepared
- Librarian spent hours walking a few
students through searches, accessing
resources and browser functions - Foundations course created which
includes modules on technology, - library resources and drug information
resources - One long narrated PowerPoint presentation
was created to orient students to the
Library - Students did not watch and did not refer
back to it when they had questions - Complaints that it covered too much and was
hard to negotiate - Had to listen to the whole thing to find an
answer - Librarian answered same questions
repeatedly - Basic questions about browsers accessing
library resources - Long phone calls walking students through
procedures - 25 modular narrated tutorials created
using Camtasia software - Some are the same ones that are used by the
PharmD program - Submitted in June and put onto the course CD

including Puerto Rico - Approximately 670 students currently
enrolled - Already have a BS in Pharmacy
- Non-traditional students
- Online with periodic regional/remote site
