Quran
  • Called the book of heaven, supposedly
revealed to Muhammad by angel Gabriel.

3
  • Divided into 114 chapters called suras,
arranged from longest to shortest a little
    shorter than the NT.

4
  • The Quran refers to the Torah, Psalms, and
Gospel (only the sayings of Jesus) as
Scripture. but retells some biblical stories
    inaccurately.

5
  • The Quran mentions Jesus many times, but
declares that Jesus is only a prophet and that he
    was not crucified.

6
  • It was revealed throughout Muhammads life (23
    yrs)

7
  • Both the Quran and the Bible claim to be the
    Word of God.
  • However both claims cannot be true.
  • Either Jesus was the Son of God or he wasnt.
  • Either Jesus died on the cross or he didnt.
  • Either Muhammad was a prophet or he wasnt

8
  • The authenticity of every religion can be
established only on the basis of its source of
    authority.

9
  • The Bible has been proven time and time again to
be a document that is inspired of God. Not the
    purpose of this study.
  • Christianity is based upon the Bible.

10
  • Does the Quran also display evidence that it is
    inspired of God?
  • If its source can be proven to be from God, then
    Islam is a credible religion.
  • If its source is clearly not from God, then it is
    not a credible religion.

11
What the basis is not
  • How certain people who claim to be followers of
    Christianity or Islam act

12
GOLDEN RULE
  • This study is not based on one translation of the
    Quran.
  • I would not want someone judging Christianity
    based upon only one translation.

13
6th/7th Century Arabia
  • Largely illiterate society
  • Relied heavily on oral tradition
  • Many of the stories came from trade caravans
  • polytheistic

14
Persecuted Jews moved to Arabia
  • Brought with them strong monotheistic background
  • Very fond of uninspired oral tradition

15
Palestinian Talmud
  • 400 AD
  • Non-inspired writings of Jewish Rabbis discussing
items related to the Old Testament

16
530 AD
17
Completed before Muhammad was born
  • 570 AD
  • Before the birth of Muhammad there was a fixed
    body of rabbinical literature
  • This was the written form of the Jewish tradition
  • People of Arabia relied upon oral form

18
  • Evidence of the reliance upon the oral stories he
thought were from the other writings of the
    people of the book
  • Words of Moses and Jesus

19
Bible
  • Gen 49 Then the LORD said to Cain, "here is
Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know am I
    my brother's keeper?"
  • Gen 410 And the LORD said, "What have you done?
The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me
    from the ground.

20
27 Recite to them the truth of the story of the
two sons of Adam.
  • 30 The (selfish) soul of the other led him to
the murder of his brother he murdered him, and
became (himself) one of the lost ones.
  • 31 Then Allah sent a raven, who scratched the
ground, to show him how to hide the shame of his
    brother.

Surah 527-32
21
Tanchuma Bereshit 10
  • After Abel was dead, Adam and Eve did not know
what to do with his body (first death). Abels
faithful dog kept animals away. They saw a Raven
scratch the ground and bury another Raven. They
then knew how to dispose of Abels body.

22
Gods Global FloodQuran
  • Surah 1136-40 and 2323-38 both indicate that
    the oven gushes forth water.
  • Other translations say the fountains of the
    earth gushes forth water.
  • Why the change?

23
Midrash Tanchuma 5Rosh Hashanah 12a
  • Both of these uninspired traditions indicate the
people derided Noah based on height and size.
  • When rain starts each drop will pass through
Gehenna before it would fall to the earth.
  • This would chastise and scald the skin of sinners
    by means of heated water.

24
Korah Numbers 16
  • such were the treasures We had bestowed on him,
that their very keys would have been a burden to
a body of strong men (Surah 2876)
  • Keys of Korahs treasure were a load for 300
white mules (Rabbi Levi in Talmud)

31
  • 31 When she heard of their malicious talk, she
sent for them and prepared a banquet for them
she gave each of them a knife and she said (to
Yusuf), "Come out before them." When they saw
him, they did extol him, and (in their amazement)
cut their hands they said, "Allah preserve us!
no mortal is this! this is none other than a
    noble angel!" (Surah 1231)

32
Questions
  • Why did she give them knives?
  • Why did they cut themselves?

33
Jewish source answers
  • Sickening details regarding the lust of
    Potiphars wife
  • Ladies invited to feast
  • Knives on tables to cut oranges
  • Could not take eyes off Joseph and cut hands

34
Conclusions
  • Muhammad used rabbinical stories he heard
thinking they were part of the scriptures of the
    People of the Book

35
Conclusions
  • Islams answer
  • Jewish sources copied the Quran
  • Problem Jewish sources completed before birth of
    Muhammad

36
Conclusions
  • In the highly illiterate time of Muhammad in
Arabia, it is understandable that he would
receive his information through oral stories and
    traditions that were not inspired.

37
Conclusions
  • In most every story where the Bible says one
thing and Jewish uninspired myth and folklore say
something else, the Quran sides with the Jewish
    sources.

38
Conclusions
  • If Muhammad was inspired by Allah, why would he
write things that would contradict what even he
admitted was inspired by Allah thousands of years
    earlier?

39
Conclusions
  • All of this evidence argues against the
    inspiration of the Quran.
  • A religion is only as valid as the source of
    authority upon which it rests.

40
Conclusions
  • What does your belief system rest upon?
  • Here at the church of Christ, we use the Bible as
    our sole source of authority.
  • It has been proven to be inspired of God
