LESSON 16 GLOSSARY

• POLAR MOLECULE A molecule with positive charges
  on one side and negative on the other.
• NONPOLAR MOLECULE A molecule in which the
  electrons are distributed more evenly and thus
  does not have an abundance of charges at the
  opposite sides. The charges all cancel out each
  other.

• NONAQUEOUS SOLVENTS A solvent that does not
  contain water.
• LATEX A milky, water based emulsion composed of
  rubber and other components.
• ORGANIC Compounds that contain the element
  carbon.
• SURFACTANT - A material that can greatly reduce
  the surface tension of water by creating a
  coating around the molecule so that water can
  bond with it. Example detergents

• IONIC COMPOUND compounds where two or more ions
  are held next to each other by electrical
  attraction. One of the ions has a positive charge
  (called a "cation") and the other has a negative
  charge ("anion").
• TOXIC- containing or being poisonous material
  especially when capable of causing death or
  serious debilitation.
