2Social Housing Background in Vancouver
The Housing Center- responsible for the City of
Vancouvers housing policy, programs research-
partners with senior levels of government to
develop social housing- goal is to enlarge the
Citys supply of housing with a range of tenures
dwelling types to meet needs of a variety of
socio-economic groups- end of 2005 over 21,000
units of social housing- since 1988 major
re-zonings of land to multi-unit residential use
must include 20 of social housing- encourages a
balanced community mix of low and moderate
income families
3Our Project Goals
It is established that there is a well developed
program to provide social housing in Vancouver,
however it is lacking in Surrey where an
increasing amount of homelessness is
concentrated. Our proposed objective for this
project is to examine the existing public housing
in Vancouver and draw characteristics from it and
apply it to the city of Surrey. After analysis of
Vancouver, we will conclude by proposing a
suitable neighborhood for the establishment of
social housing in Surrey based on the needs of
the families that the program will serve.
