Title: A Simple GIS Analysis

1
A Simple GIS Analysis
  • Classifying Data
  • Applying Symbols

2
Open ArcView with a new View
3
When prompted to add new data to the view select
yes
4
Navigate to the folder ESC 466 exam on the local
C\ drive
5
Select all of the files that appear as Feature
Data Source. Note that these are shape files
and can all be selected by holding down the shift
key while selecting them.
6
Click OK. All three shape files now appear in
the contents column. Make the parcel theme
active.
7
Open the legend editor for the parcel theme and
set the Classification Field to Landvalue.
Set Normalize by to none. Reset the Value
fields in each record to satisfy the value range
of zero to 1 million.
8
Here we see that the parcel shape theme has been
reclassified to four classes and the color ramp
has been changed to yellow chromatic
9
Next we want to display the one hundred year
flood zone theme in a way so as not to obliterate
the other two themes. Draw both the Tennessee
River and the flood zone themes.
10
Draw and change the display color for the
Tennessee River to the more cartographically
correct color of blue. Move both water themes
to the top of the table of contents.
11
Erase the Tennessee River from the display and
draw the flood zone theme. Change the symbology
and the color of this theme to match the color
of the Tennessee River theme.
12
Draw all themes and magnify the view in the
vicinity of McCellan Island. This near the UTC
campus. You will notice that ArcView 3.3 can not
make the flood zone theme transparent.
13
The ability to distinguish those parcels that
will be flooded during a one hundred year flood,
at this stage of your knowledge, is by turning
the one hundred year flood theme on and off in
the display. Later in the course we will learn
how to use the geoprocessing extension to cookie
cut those parcels that are contained within
the polygons of the one hundred year flood
theme. Also note the blank (white) areas that
appear in the view of this project. Why do they
appear this way? How would you solve this
problem? Later in the course we will also learn
how to query this data base to locate parcels of
a specific value. How would you determine the
landvalue of those parcels flooded in your
current project?
