  • OPAC via telnet or WWW is sole access to print
titles for patrons and staff since 1993
  • Purchased E-Journals fully cataloged per AACR2
    beginning 1999

8
Advantages of OPAC Access
  • Full bibliographic access to 1,000 unique
    E-journals
  • Print and E-versions of same titles have
    different bibliographic records to support
    different ISSNs, holdings information, etc.
  • Supports links from Ovid citation to OPAC record
  • OPAC management reports simplify and expedite
    print/electronic collection issues
  • OPAC access enhances efficacy of ILL software
    such as Clio and ILLIAD

9
Summary
  • Both web lists and OPAC access are easily
justified at UM where there are a large number of
    unique E-journals.
  • Of 140 libraries that responded to a 2001
    Canadian study
  • 140 (100) provide a separate list
  • 114 (82) provide access in the opac
  • 98 (70) provide both
  • www.targetinform.com/eserials/

10
3 Main Access Points
  • Static HTML lists - by title, subject and
    publisher/aggregator
  • OPAC - by separate MARC record
  • Bibliographic databases by linking software

11
Bibliographic Databases
  • PubMed/MEDLINE via LinkOut
  • Ovid/Silver Platter databases via OpenLinks and
    Journals_at_Ovid
  • MEDLINE, CINAHL, Current Contents
  • PsycINFO, BIOSIS
  • Web of Science and Cambridge Scientific Abstracts

12
Proxy Solution
  • Proxy Software from Innovative Interfaces, Inc.
  • One of 3 options included with Millennium upgrade
    at no additional charge
  • Implemented in January, 2000
  • Uses circulation module name and barcode
    information for login/password
  • Requires reconfiguration of patrons browser
  • Low of slots in proxy tables permits access
only by publisher/aggregator, and not by title

13
Possible Future Proxy Directions
  • III is eliminating need to reconfigure browser in
    2002
  • III may expand the current system maximum of 250
    slots
  • EZ Proxy can be implemented
