Year 6 SATs Breakdown of papers and marks
  • English is broken down into
  • Reading Test (50/100)
  • Two Writing Tasks one shorter task (12/50) and
    one longer task (28/50)
  • Spelling Test (7/50)
  • Handwriting (3/50)
  • Maths is broken down into
  • 2 Maths Tests (40 marks each)
  • Mental Maths Test (20 marks)
  • Science is broken down into
  • 2 Science Tests (40 marks each, out of 80)
  • On-going assessments take place throughout the
year, but at present these do not contribute to
    the SATs level achieved.

5
English Reading Test
  • Reading Task children will read a variety of
    texts independently for 15 minutes.
  • They will then have 45 minutes to answer a range
of questions to assess their comprehension skills
    and understanding of the text.

6
Writing Tasks
  • The writing is broken down into two sections
  • A long task (45 minutes) looking at their
    sentence structure, punctuation, and composition
    and effect.
  • A short task (20 minutes) which is assessed on
    sentence structure, punctuation and composition
    and effect.
  • Handwriting - this will be assessed as part of
the longer writing test and can be awarded a
    maximum of 3 marks.

7
Spelling
  • There are 20 words in the spelling test.
  • A teacher reads a text and the children fill in
the spaces with the correctly spelt words.

8
How can you support your child in reading?
  • One to one reading
  • Reading in a variety of genres e.g. stories,
    newspapers, biographies, reports
  • Reading to your child
  • Questioning your child about what they are
    reading. (comprehension)

9
How can you support your child with writing?
  • Stretch your childs styles of writing. Ask your
child to write recounts, invitations, letters,
    stories, instructions and information.
  • Sentence construction use adjectives, verbs,
connectives, adverbials, speech and a wide range
of punctuation. Try this at home If your child
writes a sentence, try to up-level it.
  • e.g. The cat walked down the street.
  • Silently, the Persian cat prowled the moonlit
    street.
  • Slinking across the street, the Tabby cat
    examined his prey.

10
How can you support your child in spelling?
  • How do you spell ?
  • Look at spelling patterns
  • Make up mnemonics to spell difficult words e.g.
Mrs D, Mrs I, Mrs FFI, Mrs C, Mrs U, Mrs LTY to
    spell DIFFICULTY
  • Look at spelling errors within writing
  • Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

11
Mathematics
  • The mathematics is broken down into 2 tests and a
    mental maths test.
  • Test A is a range of questions testing childrens
    mathematical knowledge, understanding and
reasoning of numbers and calculating, shapes,
    measures and data handling.
  • Test B is similar but the children can use a
    calculator.
  • The mental maths test is 20 quick fire questions
    from a CD.
  • There are 3 sections questions with 5 seconds to
answer, questions with 10 sections to answer and
questions with 15 seconds to answer.

12
Assessment areas in mathematics
  • 60 OF THE QUESTIONS INVOLVE A CALCULATION
  • Multiply and divide decimals mentally by 10 or
100, and integers by 1000, and explain the
    effect.
  • Order a mixed set of numbers with up to three
    decimal places.
  • Reduce a fraction to its simplest form by
    cancelling common factors.
  • Use a fraction as an operator to find fractions
    of numbers or quantities(e.g. 5/8 of 32, 7/10 of
    40, 9/100 of 400 centimetres).
  • Understand percentage as the number of parts in
every 100, and find simple percentages of small
    whole-number quantities.
  • Solve simple problems involving ratio and
    proportion.
  • Carry out column addition and subtraction of
    numbers involving decimals.
  • Derive quickly division facts corresponding to
multiplication tables up to 10 10.
  • Carry out short multiplication and division of
    numbers involving decimals.
  • Carry out long multiplication of a three-digit by
    a two-digit integer.
  • Use a protractor to measure acute and obtuse
    angles to the nearest degree.
  • Calculate the perimeter and area of simple
compound shapes that can be split into
    rectangles.
  • Read and plot co-ordinates in all four quadrants.
  • Identify and use the appropriate operations
(including combinations of operations) to solve
word problems involving numbers and quantities,
    and explain methods and reasoning.
  • Solve a problem by extracting and interpreting
information presented in tables, graphs and
    charts.
  • Many of these topics will incorporate aspects of
    problem solving.

13
How can you support your childs mathematical
skills?
  • Practise calculations both mentally and written.
  • Telling the time/reading timetables and calendars
  • Calculating change and the cost of items
  • Weighing and measuring
  • Shape recognition
  • Revision - revision guides
  • Come to the after-school club which starts next
    week!

14
Science
  • The children are tested on their scientific
knowledge, covering all the topics and areas
learned during key stage 2 - years 3 to 6, these
include Scientific Enquiry, Life Processes and
Living Things, Materials and their Properties,
    Physical Processes.
  • There are 2 Science Papers, they are similar in
and asked how to carry out an investigation.
