3
History
  • The name Niobium came from the word "Niobe" which
    means "daughter of Tantalus.
  • At first, this mineral sample was thought to
    be chromium...

4
The Discovery!
  • After experimenting with the mineral it was
determined that this mineral was not chromium,
but some oxide of an unknown element.
  • The new element was named columbium.

5
The New Name
  • It was later determined that columbium and
niobium were the same element and some scientist
tried to change the name niobium back to
    columbium. This idea failed.

6
The Preparation
  • The metal Niobium was prepared for the first time
in 1864 by Blomstrand who reduced the chloride by
heating it in a hydrogen atmosphere.

This is a virtual representation of niobium metal
in the form of a cup.

Basic Information
  • Atomic Mass- 92.91amu
  • Melting Point- 2468 C
  • Boiling Point- 4927 C
  • Number of Protons/Electrons- 41
  • Number of Neutrons- 52
  • Classification- Transition Metal
  • Color- White

8
Important Uses
  • Along with titanium, Niobium is frequently used
in pacemakers, artificial joints, and dental
    implants.
  • It is used in arc-welding rods for stabilizing
the different forms of stainless steel.

9
More Uses
  • Larger amounts of niobium are used in advanced
    air frame systems.
  • Because it does not react with uranium and how it
does not corrode, Niobium has been used in
    nuclear reactors.

10
Appearences
  • Niobium occurs primarily in two minerals,
    columbite and pyrochlore.
  • The abundance of niobium in the Earth's crust is
estimated to be about 20 ppm. (parts per million)

11
Fun Fact
  • Did you know that the most powerful magnet in
the world is made out of niobium?
  • Now you do
