Breaking Down Chromosomes into DNA
5
Growing and Viewing DNA
6
  • There are 6,000 known single-gene genetic
    disorders
  • They occur about 1 in every 200 births
  • Cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, Marfan
    syndrome, Huntingtons disease, and hereditary
hemochromatosis are just a few of the known
    diseases.

11
Gummy Bear Game
  • Twizzlers Plasmid
  • Gummy Bears nucleotides
  • Little Twizzlers restriction enzyme
  • The object of the game was to get an outlook of
what plasmids look like due to the small size of
    the DNA.

Fitness Tips from Emily
  • Purpose of the Cardiac Project is to reduce
cardiovascular disease mortality in WV through
    research and intervention with children.

14
Screening Done for Cardiac Project
  • Check height and weight
  • Calculate Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Check blood pressure
  • Measure blood cholesterol
  • Examine neck for Acanthosis Nigricans (AN)

18
Restriction Enzymes
19
Restriction Enzymes
  • Restriction enzymes are DNA-cutting enzymes
    found in bacteria.
  • A restriction enzyme cuts the DNA
  • It also allows the double helix form a single
    strand
  • EcoR1 and BamH1 are enzymes we use in
    fingerprinting.

20
Restriction Enzymes follow the chain of DNA until
they find the pattern they recognize and cut it
in half so scientist can insert new DNA.
Heather and Kara are labeling that contain horse
and sheep DNA that are going to be split by the
enzyme.
