Content management
In partnership with Kent County Council, Claranet
designed and currently host websites for the
parish councils in Kent
Challenge
  • Kent County Council (KCC) and Kent Parish
Councils required a holistic, content managed
    solution
  • KCC spent 200k developing an in house solution
    but were unsuccessful
  • Templates needed to contain both information
about the specific parish and generic council
    information
  • Employees were not proficient in HTML

5
Content management
  • Solution
  • Claranet worked in partnership with KCC to
    deliver a cost effective solution
  • Design based on Microsofts content management
    server
  • Best of breed hardware, monitored and managed by
    Claranet
  • Hosted in Claranets world-class data centre

"Claranet were selected as the result of a
competitive tender process. We were impressed
with Claranet mainly because of their cost
effectiveness and responsiveness. They grasped
what we were looking for, and designed a bespoke
solution appropriate to our requirements. BRIAN
TAYLER Policy and Commissioning Manager for Kent
County Council Information Services Group.

Netlink online education
Claranet provided de Ferrers college with the
Netlink, managed education solution consisting of
learning content, connectivity and a virtual
learning Environment (VLE).
Challenge
Solutions in the market place did not meet the
schools needs.
De Ferrers required a solution that would
  • Enable teachers to teach and learners to learn in
    a secure, online environment
  • Integrate feeder schools allowing them to be more
    inclusive
  • Use ICT to achieve school objectives

7
Netlink online education
  • Solution
  • The solution encompassed a dynamic, personalised
web portal, email, video conferencing capability,
content and virus scanning and web enabled data
    storage for school work
  • Teachers, parents and learning communities could
    interact
  • in the VLE from any computer, anywhere
  • A managed implementation programme (MIP) was
    developed
  • to deliver specific objectives using
    ICT insuring adoption

Thanks to Claranets high-speed, high-quality
architecture, we are ensured a permanent, safe,
reliable and dynamic learning environment all
accessed through a simple web browser. ANDY BIRD
- Assistant Principal, Research and Development.

MPLS / VPN solution
Claranet supply a comprehensive and bespoke MPLS
solution to the Electoral Commission. The private
network connects all their offices, enabling the
Commissions remote sites to share information,
files and applications, and to function as though
they were all at a single, geographical
location.
Challenge
  • The Electoral Commissions offices were connected
    through an expensive VPN
  • The Commission were operating site-to-site links
over the public network, therefore security was
    a concern
  • A need to deliver value for money

9
MPLS / VPN solution
  • Solution
  • Claranet redesigned the Commissions existing
    network topology
  • A MPLS VPN solution was recommended
  • The solution was secure and scaleable

Our fully-managed MPLS solution from Claranet
is working well. Significantly, it has enabled
us to cut management costs, since we only have
one firewall on our gateway to the Internet and
we have made substantial savings by cutting the
associated costs of flights, hotels, and taxis as
well as the travelling time involved between
our offices. We are happy with the service we are
receiving and are confident that any problems
arising will be handled effectively and
efficiently. GRAEME HALL - Electoral Commission
IT Manager

Home workers
Home working has become increasingly common.
Claranet solutions give employees who travel or
work at home remote access to the company
network, so they can work effectively in a remote
location as they can at their desks.
Challenge Many ISPs are unable to deliver the
range of products and offer business grade
support needed by customers
Solution We were able to deliver a range of
products to a number of county and district
councils
  • SSL VPNs
  • Full range of bit speeds and download
    capabilities from 500kb to 8Mb
  • Flexible billing

11
Framework agreements
Currently at an early stage, but Claranet have
been asked to provide input to the OGC for the
latest framework contract on ISP and ISP
services. The OGC requires clarification of the
numerous types of services, such as anti virus,
that could be included in this, and future,
framework contracts.

Behind or ahead of the game?
  • Challenge
  • Regulation has driven the need to devise
    innovative solutions. The public sector
  • has also been required to use technology to
deliver secure networks. The only sector
  • which Has seen similar explosive growth has been
    the independent finance sector
  • Which has similar regulatory requirements. Public
    Sector Ahead of the game.
  • E Applications
  • Few local government services are online for the
citizen in a fully transactional way, e.g.
  • Identity management. The corporate sector in
    particular the banking/finance sector has
  • Revolutionised online applications. Public Sector
    Behind the game

13
Behind or ahead of the game?
Procurement Cycle Legendary in the public sector
and although on average 50 higher value in
typical tenders (Source Gartner Group 2004), are
at least a 6 month longer cycle. This leads to a
requirement for companies to invest large
resource to deliver bid responses
(organisations like us are reluctant to commit
this resource), and a drag on technology
(implementing 12 -18 month technology) Public
Sector Behind the game SME Market Generally the
LG market is much more conservative in its choice
of supplier leading to a reluctance to engage
the SME market. This has led in general to a lack
of awareness of possible niche solutions that
deliver technology. Public Sector Behind the
game
14
Behind or ahead of the game?
  • Innovative Solutions for the less able citizen
  • The public sector has been at the forefront of
    technology including WAI AA
  • compliancy and particularly in mobile solutions.
Public Sector Ahead of the game
  • .
  • Driving down Costs
  • The tender process naturally drives down the
    costs of technology more effectively
  • than sole sourcing as is often the case in the
    corporate sector.
  • Public Sector Ahead of the game

15
New technologies
  • These examples of emerging technologies are
    equally placed
  • within public/corporate sector
  • Web Streaming
  • Mail Archiving
  • Knowledge Sharing
