Foresight Vehicle Technology Roadmap
  • Innovate 2006
  • 2nd November 2006

3
SMMT Foresight Vehicle
  • SMMT Foresight Vehicle is the UK's prime
knowledge transfer network for the automotive
    industry
  • Originates from the 1993 Government White Paper
    Realising our Potential
  • Initiated by the DTI, now administered by the
Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders
  • Integral part of the KTN network

4
Vision and Mission
5
Achieving the Mission
  • Development of a sector level technology roadmap
  • Harnessed input from experts in industry,
academia and stakeholders in the transport sector
  • A rich picture of markets, products, systems
    and technologies

6
Result
  • DTI recognition as a major contribution to
prioritising the technology needs for the vehicle
    sector
  • Provides the framework for investment in vehicle
    RD in the UK
  • Used by the Technology Strategy Board as an input
    into setting strategy
  • Used to help set the agenda for Collaborative RD
    Technology calls
  • Used as an example of how a sector can get its
    act together

7
Evaluation of Priorities
8
Technology Roadmap
  • Developed to identify technology and research
themes for the road transport sector
  • Considers a 20 year timescale
  • Version 1.0 2002
  • Version 2.0 2004
  • Version 3.0 2007

9
Version 1.0
  • Technology roadmap process carried out by the
    Institute for Manufacturing, Cambridge University
  • Input from gt130 experts representing gt60
    organisations

10
Architecture

15
Expert Opinion
  • Experts from the thematic groups
  • Workshops to consider the trends and drivers, and
    performance measures and targets

16
Version 2.0
  • Version 1.0 conceived as a live document
  • Focus the roadmap to more clearly identify
    priorities
  • Strengthen the link between industrial
    requirements and research challenges
  • Provide a means for ongoing maintenance without
    undue overhead

17
Process
  • SMMT Engineering Committee reviewed performance
    measures and targets
  • Review of the trends and drivers by a stakeholder
    workshop
  • Thematic group workshops reviewed the range and
scope of technologies to achieve the targets

Will be answered by the applications in response
to the DTI Technology Programme calls
19
SMMT Input
  • SMMT agreed to provide inputs on destinations and
arrival times by the Engineering Committee
  • 3 major themes identified
  • Progress towards zero emissions
  • Progress towards zero accidents
  • Choice for customers and consumers
  • Infrastructure and vehicle developments need to
    be linked and in-step

20
Engineering Committee
  • Considered targetsfrom V1.0
  • Identified any disagreements and omissions
  • Identified most/least important issues
  • Identified any non-technical barriers
  • Provided new information
  • Comprehensive review

21
Stakeholder Workshop
  • Revised trends and drivers

22
Thematic Group Workshop
  • How can TG contribute to the destinations
  • Views on technologies needed, performance
    measures and targets
  • Building consensus on priorities

23
Version 2.0
  • Published October 2004 to coincide with the ITS
    World Congress in Nagoya

24
Version 3.0 - Software
  • Feasibility study to convert hardware (paper)
    version to software

Conclusions
  • Roadmaps are valuable tools to identify
    technology priorities
  • They can be used by communities to communicate
these priorities as an input into the Technology
    Strategy
  • Software roadmaps can act as a link to other
sources of information and so act as a key part
    of KTN activities
  • Software and hardware roadmaps have different
    strengths
  • Migrating hardware roadmaps to software is not
    straightforward
