Why we need an initiative

• As reported in three different studies
• Sentinels report of 2003
• RAND Europe report of 2004
• and the innovation scan by SenterNovem of 2005
• One of the most important issues about security
  research in the Netherlands
• The large gap between theory and practice
• This gap results in
• Little knowledge transfer
• Little industrial guidance on research
• Dutch industry takes too little advantage of the
  investments in scientific security research

What is the NVSO?

• Since neither industry, nor universities are able
  to bridge the gap with industry on their own,
  there is a need for joint action.
• The NVSO is a virtual knowledge centre initiated
  by
• Philips Research
• TNO Information and Communication Technology
• Centre of Telematics and Information Technology,
  University of Twente

Goal of the NVSO

• Ambition
• Bridging the gap between scientific security
  research and industrial security needs in the
  Netherlands
• In particular increase build-up and transfer of
  scientific knowledge in security on topics
  relevant for the Dutch industry
• Goal
• Develop a joint vision on security research in
  the Netherlands
• To facilitate in the execution of this vision
• Areas of relevant research identified so far
• Secure systems engineering, Secure information
  management, Trust, Organizational security,
  Security Applications, and Applied Cryptography

• Strong player in the Dutch ICT research field
• More than 20 researchers in security
• Goal to innovate the security market by closing
  the gap between academic and applied research
