Title: If you say so fish head

1
If you say so fish head!
2
Everything in life serves a purpose and has
efficient and final causes
Aquinas argued that natural purpose of the world
is found in God
Aquinas believed the human purpose was to
reproduce learn live harmoniously in society AND
to worship God
The theologian considers sin principally as an
offence against God whereas the moral philosopher
considers it as being contrary to reason -
Aquinas
3
Thus contraception, oral and anal sex,
masturbation and homosexuality are all understood
as activities that prevent procreation from
happening and are condemned as unnatural by the
Catholic church
The issue is really one of defining what the
final cause of something is? In this case is it
that the sexual act should result in procreation
or that couples should have children?
Artificial insemination for example is seen as
unnatural because it doesnt take place within
the context of a sexual act
4
Is the telos (purpose) of sex always procreation?
What about sexual intercourse as an expression of
love between a couple or as something enjoyable?
If every sexual action should result in
procreation what about couples who cant have
babies?
What about women who get pregnant after being
raped? In this context does Natural Law actually
condone rape?
5
It may look at times that people are driven more
by good but is this merely social conditioning?
In fact a careful consideration of people may
reveal to them to be more selfish than not
Is nature innately good as well?
All too often we see unnecessary suffering and
pain caused both by nature to humans and humans
to each other
6
Underlying Aquinas ethical notions are a number
of key presuppositions that a humanist ethic
would not necessarily include.
For instance it begins with a notion that God has
created the world with purpose and that the final
end of all things is in God (or an after-life
Heaven?)
This is clearly a contention for humanists (or
non-theists).
He also begins with the assumption that human
nature is more good than evil
