2 What SHINE is SHINE is an affiliation of
researchers within the solar, interplanetary, and
heliospheric communities, dedicated to promoting
an enhanced understanding of the processes by
which energy in the form of magnetic fields and
particles are produced by the Sun and/or
accelerated in interplanetary space and on the
mechanisms by which these fields and particles
are transported to the Earth through the inner
heliosphere.
3 A Brief History of SHINE First Meeting
Boulder, 1996 (This hotel!) .
4 What SHINE does SHINE research focuses in
particular upon the connection between events and
phenomena on the Sun and their relation to solar
wind structures in the inner heliosphere. The
goal of SHINE activities is to enrich and
strengthen both physical understanding and
predictive capabilities for these phenomena.

6- SHINE 2005 Workshop
- July 11th-15th in Hawaii
- Student day on July 10 and will be held at the
- Sheraton Keauhou resort (http//www.sheratonkeauh
ou.com) - Guaranteed government per diem rates
- Workshop format Plenary talks, informational
talks from our agency reps, lots of lively
working group sessions
7- SHINE 2005 Workshop
- Our topics for this year will include
Sub-surface evolution, numerical models of CME
initiation, radio observations of CMEs and
particle acceleration, origin of the solar wind,
modeling and observations of interplanetary
shocks, ICMEs, and SEPs, the contribution of CMEs
to the solar wind at solar maximum, recent
advances in modeling and data interpretation of
SHINE campaign events, mechanisms of particle
acceleration near the Sun, and the effects of the
Sun on the outer heliosphere - Working group leaders Bill Abbett, Mihir Desai,
Joe Giacalone, Simon Plunkett, Ian Richardson,
and Ilia Roussev.
8- Student Travel Grants
- Limited funds will be available to support
student and post-doc travelto Hawaii. - To apply, e-mail a brief description of your
thesis work andthe name and e-mail address of
your thesis advisor to Nat Gopalswamy,gopals_at_fuge

9- Campai(g)n Events
- Rationale To improve our understanding of the
coronal mass ejection (CME) process as well as
the coronal and solar wind context in which they
occur. - The three general questions that the Campaigns
address are - How are CMEs initiated?
- How do they evolve or propagate?
- How are solar energetic particles accelerated and
transported? - Five Events

10- SHINE Logo Competition
- SHINE is 10 years old and we still dont have our
own logo - CEDAR and GEM have their own!
- Create one, Email it to me (pete.riley_at_saic.com),
and you could win BIG.
11- SHINE and IHY
- Many overlapping interests and goals
- Coordinate our Working Group topics
- Coordinate campaign events
12- Closing Remarks
- SHINE and IHY goals closely aligned
- Opportunity for SHINE/GEM/CEDAR to collaborate
more extensively
