Unit Cell Concept
  • Strictly speaking, a unit cell is a square with
sides measuring one unit. However, for the
purposes of tessellations, unit cells can either
be a square, equilateral triangle, or regular
hexagon. Notice that these are the polygons
involved in regular tessellations which is not a
coincidence. The technique of unit cells takes
advantage of this property. Patterns are drawn
inside unit cells so that when the unit cells are
repeated in the manner of the regular
tessellations, the patterns repeat to form a
    tessellation.

Examples of Unit Cell Tessellations (Unit
Hexagon)

The red, green, and blue dots on
the left indicate points which correspond and
line up when the hexagon is duplicated. The
resulting tiling is shown on the right.
  • In a tiling of regular hexagons, opposite
sides line up. In other words, sides 1 and 4 line
up, sides 2 and 5 line up, and sides 3 and 6 line
    up.

                      The white lines on the
right indicate the original pattern from the unit
hexagon.
