Euphrates River Valley
  • Around 4,500 B.C. nomadic people settle in the
    Euphrates River Valley.
  • This land was very valuable because of its
    nutrients that is provided for growing crops and
    maintaining life.

  • Euphrates River Valley located in modern day Iraq

Tigris River Valley
  • Located near the Euphrates River Valley in
    present day Iraq.
  • Both civilizations were similar do to their close
    proximity to one another and similar land
    features, climate, animal et cetera.

    the Nile River very important to irrigation of
    crops and survival of humans and animals.

Agricultural Revolution
  • About 10,000 years ago the domestication of
    plants sparked the agricultural revolution
  • During this time many people started
    domesticating plants such as wheat, rice, and
    corn.

How the Agricultural Revolution Affected the Rise
of Civilization
  • In the early stages of civilization after people
    domesticated plants they no longer had to travel
    from place to place to collect food.
  • The domestication forced permanent settlements
    which grew into small collective areas like a
    small town.

Urban Revolution
  • Around 6000 B.C. cities began to emerge.
  • Within the growth of these cities government and
    religion was establish. The only problem was in
    early civilization there was no separation of
    church and state.

Urban Revolution Development of Theocracy
  • Theocracy was a necessity within the new
    societies.
  • People feared the many gods and the only people
    who could communicate and please the gods were
    the priests.
  • The priests were then put into power to keep the
    gods happy and the people safe.

Theocracy Affects
  • In many ways theocracy affected everyone. People
    were ruled by their fear of the gods.
  • In many cases farmers were one of the biggest
    examples. Farmers were most knowledgeable about
    planting time. Although the priests were the ones
    who told them when to plant.
  • The farmers also made sacrifices to the gods
    hoping for a prosperous growing season.

Land Disputes
  • Land Disputes were quite simple.
  • Because of urban development people demanded more
    land so disputes or wars started.
  • Therefore each settlement needed their own army
    to protect themselves from attack. With their
    new settlements they could support these soldiers.

Social Classes
  • With the various positions now present within
    these new settlements created civilization as we
    know it today.
  • Each person was present on the social ladder.
    Farmers, Kings/Priests, and the wealthy warriors.
  • The farmers were the lower class. The warriors
    were middle class. Of course the kings and
    priests were on the top of the social ladder.
  • Early civilization created lower, middle, and
    upper class as we know it today.
