WD Values - Innovation
  • Innovation
  • We constantly look for new ways to improve
    technology, products, process, systems, and
    people.
  • We show intellectual curiosity and the continuing
desire to learn, seeking improvements, even in
    the face of success.
  • We work hard to support an environment where
people look for creative ways to benefit the
    business.
  • We take constructive risks and remove barriers
getting in the way of achieving excellence.

TRIZ - Introduction
  • TRIZ (IPA /tri?z/) is a romanized acronym for
    Russian ?????? ??????? ???????????????? ?????
    (Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch)
meaning "The Theory of Inventive Problem
    Solving"
  • Russian Scientist, Engineer, and Inventor
  • Dr. Genrikh Altshuller , Creator of TRIZ
  • His job, inspect invention proposals, help
document them, and help others to invent.
  • By 1969 he reviewed about 40,000 patent abstracts
in order to find out in what way the innovation
    had taken place.
  • Altshuller's analysis revealed that all technical
systems evolve along natural and predictable
    patterns, or lines of evolution.
  • In addition, it soon became evident that all
    industries utilized the same underlying
    innovative principles therefore, these
principles could be generalized for universal
    application.
  • Innovation could be learned. Innovation could be
    taught.
  • Today, TRIZ is a methodology, tool set, knowledge
base, and model-based technology for generating
innovative ideas and solutions for problem
solving at Procter Gamble, Boeing, Philips
    Semiconductor, Samsung Electronics, LG
Electronics, Boston Scientific, GM, Rockwell, HP,
    Motorola

  • Analysis of the Method that remove the Physical
    Contradiction
  • Utilization of Obtained Solution
  • Analysis of Steps that lead to Solutions

11
TRIZ Innovation Levels
  • 5 Levels of Innovation
  • Level 1 - A simple improvement of technical
system, required knowledge available within a
    trade relevant to that system
  • Level 2 An invention that includes the
resolution of a technical contradiction, required
knowledge from different areas within an industry
    relevant to the system
  • Level 3 An invention containing a resolution of
a physical contradiction, required a knowledge
    from other industries
  • Level 4 A new technology is developed
containing a breakthrough solution that required
knowledge from different field of science
  • Level 5 Discovery of a new phenomena, new
knowledge provides for the development of new
    technology

12
TRIZ Six Sigma Facts
  • Six Sigma operates based on the assumption that
the solution to a problem is contained within the
    process under investigation, DMAIC process.
  • Six Sigma is very powerful when this assumption
is true as it enables the practitioners to
identify the transfer function (y f (x)) and
    control the output.
  • In many cases the solution to the problem is not
to be found in the process and this inhibits the
ability to identify the control variables.
  • In this case, a methodology that can solve the
problem outside of the process boundaries, such
as the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving
(TRIZ), is necessary. gt Out of Box Thinking
  • TRIZ can make up for the weak points of the Six
Sigma process. While Six Sigma is efficient for
finding problems that need resolution, TRIZ helps
    overcome those problems/contradictions. Six Sigma
is efficient for finding the main factor of the
problem but Six Sigma cannot always answer
    resolve those issues.
  • The successful integration of TRIZ with Six Sigma
can overcome any limitations originating from
lack of solution location in the process space.
