The Role of Colleges in Economically Challenging
TimesDoug Boynton
21
  • Why are we in the FE business?
  • Because we care passionately about people,
    education, and training

22
  • We are in a unique position to offer hope , new
direction, and purpose to individuals and
    businesses
  • Unemployment is always a bitter pill.
  • However it is only terminal, if as an individual
you do not have the skills or motivation to adapt
    to new working conditions
  • FE Colleges can and should be offering solutions
    to this ( many are)

23
  • Our role has never been more important
  • We have the skills, we have the empathic staff
  • However we need to develop new and different
    partnerships new flexibilities
  • We need to be able to cut thro some of the
nonsense and respond rapidly ( that includes
access to monies to enable us to respond)

24
  • Every college has an enviable network of existing
    contacts with employers
  • You probably know what is happening in your area
    before anyone does
  • No provider base is better positioned in these
    challenging times
  • We will however have to take some risks

25
  • What are we doing at TCAT?
  • We established a Rapid Response Team
  • This team can put support in place for a company
    within a matter of days
  • There are 4 types of support that we are
    currently providing to companies
  • In addition we have a separate support package
for individuals who have been unemployed for more
    than 6 months

26
  • The 4 support programmes for companies are as
    follows
  • Support for companies under the threat of closure
  • Support for companies who are restructuring/downsi
    zing

27
  • 3. Support for companies who require specific
training to support a diversification of their
    business
  • 4. Support for companies who are implementing
planned downtime and short term working

28
  • Support for Individuals
  • We are currently proving this thro the National
    Voluntary Training Pathfinder
  • At the moment it is for people that have been out
of work for more than 6 months
  • It is possible it may be extended to 1st day
    signers

29
  • This involves a new partnership with JCP and it
    has been an interesting journey
  • After a very slow start it has now picked up
momentum and we have 100 people on programme and
    50 referrals a week
  • All delivered flexibly on campus
  • Feedback form both the individuals and JCP is
    very good

30
  • What do we still need?
  • More flexibility from all agencies
  • Some way around the weight of bureaucracy that
hampers responsiveness (everybody needs to work
    quicker)
  • A strategic steer so that while we are helping
individuals and companies we know what the end
    point is
