Title: USGS Landsat Program Status February 5, 2005

1
USGS Landsat Program StatusFebruary 5, 2005

2
USGS Landsat Mission Status
  • Landsat 7
  • Current end of life projection is 2010-2011
  • Fuel limited
  • Scan Line Corrector (SLC) failure
  • Landsat 5
  • Current end of life projection is 2009
  • Fuel limited
  • Working on obtaining a variance to extend mission
    life

3
USGS Landsat Goals
  • Extend both missions as long as possible
  • Minimize potential data gap
  • Continue to make the SLC-off data as useful as
possible to as many Landsat data users as
    possible

4
Landsat 7 ETM SLC-Off New Product Development
Status (Phase 1)
  • Results
  • Selected localized histogram matching method for
    Phase 1 SLC-off to SLC-on gap-filled products
  • Method implemented excludes high and low
    saturations
  • Use zero-interpolated versus standard two-pixel
    interpolated product as input
  • The corrective gain between two datasets is found
using the ratios of the standard deviation of the
datasets. The corrective bias is then calculated
as the offset between the datasets gain-adjusted
means. This method is being implemented in Phase
1 versus a linear fit procedure.
  • Phase 1 SLC-off to SLC-on gap-filled product
    released 10 May 2004
  • Included gap pixel mask (binary)
  • Also released user selectable interpolation and
    annotated browse on user interface

5
Landsat 7 ETM SLF-Off New Product Development
Status (Phase 2)
  • Results
  • Selected localized histogram matching method for
    phase 2 SLC-off to SLC-off gap-filled products
  • Same as Phase 1, method excludes high and low
    saturations and uses zero-interpolated versus
standard two-pixel interpolated product as input
  • Implemented linear regression for histogram
    matching
  • Implemented adaptive window processing based on a
threshold for the minimum number of common pixels
  • Also added a test for output pixel saturation and
a threshold test on the computed gain
  • Phase 2 SLC-off to SLC-off gap-filled product
    released 18 Nov 2004/16 Dec 2004
  • Included gap pixel mask with all input products
    explicitly identified
  • GPS generation for all new data and began
reprocessing of data on 28 October 2004 working
    backwards
  • Began generation of enhanced browse using hybrid
    (3X subsampling/2X wavelet)reduction technique
  • Completed nearly 10 cycles (160days) of
    reprocessing

USGS Landsat Data Continuity Mission Status
  • Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) had the
    following priorities
  • Commercial Enterprise meetings and survey
    indicated lack of industry interest
  • Commercial/Government Partnership procurement
canceled due to inappropriate risk balancing
  • International Partnership post LDCM?
  • Government Only Administration has chosen to
place it on the NPOESS (National Polar-Orbiting
    Environmental Satellite System)

8
USGS Landsat Data Continuity Mission Status
  • Current Status
  • NASA is conducting a study to understand
cost/schedule/risk for integration on NPOESS 2130
    spacecraft
  • Earliest launch data is estimated to be end of
    CY2009
  • NPOESS launch will change
  • WRS Path/Row Map, Altitude, Calibration, etc.
  • Input on scientific thoughts/opinions are
    welcomed by the USGS
  • LDCM Point of Contact
  • Chris Doescher
  • USGS LDCM System Engineer
  • cdoesh_at_usgs.gov
