Dont Judge a Book by its Cover
  • Our society constantly judges people on their
appearances. Here are some cultural phenomena
that are based on judging people by their looks.
    Lets discuss them.
  • Cliques
  • Beauty Pageants
  • Reality TV
  • Americas Next Top Model
  • Beauty and the Geek
  • Can you think of others?

26
Media Images
  • We are bombarded by the medias ideal body image
every day. Think about how many people you know
    who look like Eva Longoria.
  • Media ideals affect both guys and girls, but
lets watch this clip from Dove Films to get an
idea of all the images girls are exposed to.

27
Our Own Self-Image
  • We judge ourselves too. Many of us are very
    critical of our own appearances.
  • Think about all the things you wish you could
    change about your appearance.
  • This might be pretty easy for some of you.
  • Maybe you are pretty happy with your appearance
    overall.

28
The Negative Impact
  • Sometimes this self-judgment and not feeling
good enough can literally make you sick. In
fact, the root causes for eating disorders almost
always come back to a feeling of being not good
enough. The idea that our image or our appearance
is what makes us good leads people to try to
control their bodies in really damaging ways.

29
Activity 2
  • Now, this might be harder for you, but I want you
to make a list of everything you like about your
    body and your appearance.
  • You need to come up with at least 10 things.
  • They can be as small as I have clean toenails
or as big as I have a beautiful (or handsome)
    face.

30
  • This is just the start, because we are so much
more than our appearances, even though we live in
a world that judges people based on how they
    look.

31
  • Go back to your list of 10 things you like about
your appearance and add to it 10 good personality
traits, qualities, talents or abilities you have.
Are you a good friend? Are you creative? Can you
    make an awesome grilled cheese?
  • Come up with 10 things that you like about who
    you are.

32
  • We can get confused with basing our identities
on what we have or what we do or what we look
like. It is important to remember that who we are
is whats inside. Our personalities, our minds,
our spirits. Keep this in mind the next time you
want to judge someone else. Keep this in mind the
next time you want to judge and criticize your
    own appearance.

33
Ticket Out
  • On your piece of paper, I want to you make up 2
    rules or guidelines for yourself.
  • For example,
  • 1) I will not make critical or mean comments
    about other peoples appearances.
  • 2) I will not make negative comments about my
body, and if I do so by accident, I will follow
it up with a positive comment.
  • OR
  • 3) I will only say thank you when someone
offers me a compliment on my looks.
