2Go into www.library.nhs.uk and click on Login now
3Enter your Athens login and password.
4Click on Healthcare Databases Advanced Search.
5Click on Healthcare Databases Advanced Search page
6Select CINAHL by ticking on the box and then on
next or by clicking on CINAHL
7Type MRSA in the search box Click on Map to
Thesaurus and then click on SEARCH
8Tick on select by Staphylococcal Infections and
then click on SEARCH
9You should get approx. 3,300 hits Now put
Handwashing in the search box Click on Map to
Thesaurus and then click on SEARCH
10Tick on select by Handwashing and then click on
SEARCH
11You should get approx. 2,600 hits
12You now want to combine your searches. Click on
the boxes by Staphylococcal Infections and
Handwashing and click On COMBINE SELECTED
SEARCHES
13You should get approx. 150 hits To reduce this
further you can use limits
14Put the number of the search that you wish to
limit in this case 3 into the search box, set
the date limits to 2005 to 2008 and then click on
SEARCH
15You should get approx. 80 hits
16You can if you wish limit this further by
language, type of article e.g. review, gender
etc. To limit the articles to reviews put the
number of the search in this case 4 in the
search box, scroll down to Article Journal and
Publication type, click on the double arrows on
the right, scroll down to review in Publication
Type, click on Review and then click on SEARCH.
17You should get 3 hits. If you want to look at the
list of articles you have selected then click on
the number of hits in this case 3.
18A list of the 3 articles will appear. Click on
the title line of those you are interested in.
19Fuller details will appear including abstracts
and links to full text articles if they exist.
You may have to re-enter your Athens login and
password for some full text links. Be warned that
the links dont always work.
20Click on the boxes by the article you are
interested in. Their numbers should appear in the
results selected box if you scroll down to the
bottom of the page. You can then export the
results to a floppy disc, memory stick etc. To do
this click on Export Results
21Or you can email them to yourself or a colleague.
To do this click on Email Results.
22Your results will look like this
23You can also run the same search on another
database such as Medline. Click on Search using
different databases.
24Select the new database in this example Medline
you want and click on the box next to it. Click
on NEXT.
25You can click on Re-execute search history. It is
preferable though to start another search as the
different databases use slightly different search
terms. To do this click on CONTINUE.
26As well as searching by keywords we can also
search by journal and author. Use quotation
marks for journals e.g. new england journal of
medicine.
27For authors use the format surname initial e.g.
clarke t or if you dont know the initial just
the surname followed by a wildcard e.g
clarke
28You can then combine journal and authors to
produce a short list of articles to look at.
