2The WEEE Directive. The legislation (Directive
2002/96/EC.) applies to the disposal of Waste
Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The WEEE
directive requires producers of electrical and
electronic equipment to finance disposal of their
waste products at end of life. This includes the
collection, appropriate treatment and auditing to
meet specific targets for recycling and recovery.
The directive does not just apply to new
products but also to historic waste.
Who is Affected? The WEEE directive affects all
producers, importers, distributors and retailers
of electronic and electrical equipment with
voltages up to 1000V AC and 1500V DC. There are
estimated to be 45,000 such organisations in the
UK, of which you could be one! The WEEE
directive covers the design and production of
electrical and electronic equipment to aid
repair, possible upgrading, re-use, disassembling
and recycling at end of life. The directive
becomes effective from August 2005, but
registration will be required before this. By
mid-2005 all affected companies must have in
place appropriate measures for meeting the
directive.
