Title: So Far from the Sea

1
So Far from the Sea
  • By Eve Bunting
  • Report By Eleanor Morse

2
The Main Character
  • The main character in So Far from the Sea is a
girl named Laura. Laura is a half Japanese girl
whos father was in a internment camp called
Manzanar and also her grandfather died in that
camp. She is visiting the camp one more time
because she is moving to Boston, Massachusetts.

3
A Picture of Manzanar
  • This is a picture of Manzanar that was
probably taken more than sixty year ago.

4
Some questions I asked when I was reading the
story
  • Why did the Americans put all the
    Japanese-Americans in internment camps?
  • Why are they visiting Manzanar?
  • Why are they standing next to a gravestone on the
    cover?
  • How did the grandfather dye?

5
Some Predictions I asked in the story
  • I think Americans put all the Japanese-Americans
in Japanese internment camps because they thought
they were doing something wrong against the
    Americans.
  • I think they are visiting Manzanar because they
never going to get to visit it for a long time
since they are going to move to Boston.
  • I think that they are standing next to a
gravestone because it represents someone very
    important who died at Manzanar.
  • The grandfather probably died of old age.

6
Some clues that I found in the story
  • On one of the pages it shows the Japanese setting
a bomb in pearl harbor which is in Hawaii. From
this picture I inferred that the Japanese were
doing something bad and that people were going to
    get hurt.
  • I the text it says that they were moving to
Boston and this is probably going to be the
last time they are going to visit Manzanar.
  • In the text Lauras dad says Just a little bit
    farther to his grave.
  • In one of the pictures it show the grandfather
eating and he looked pretty old so I guess that
    he died of old age.

Answers
  • They put all the Japanese-Americans in Japanese
internment camps because the Japanese set a bomb
in America and the Americans thought the
Japanese-Americans were being spies for the
    Japanese government.
  • They are visiting Manzanar because the
    grandfather was buried there.
  • The monument on the cover wasnt really a
gravestone of someone. It was telling people
that there was a Cemetery right there.
  • The grandfather died of .

8
Connections
  • One connection is that my grandfather was put
into a internment camp called Topaz when he was
    12 years old.
  • My 2nd connection is that my great aunt Marie was
    put in Manzanar.
  • My 3rd connection is that I saw an exhibit on
    Manzanar in California.

9
The End
10
  • So far from the sea was a fictional story but
Manzanar was a real place and there still is
that little grave yard in the very back.
