- President Lincoln gave General Grant command of
ALL Union armies - Grant called for all Union forces to coordinate
their attacks. - Grant would focus on pursuing Lees army in
Virginia - While General William T. Sherman pushed through
the Deep South

- General Sherman pushed his troops southward from
Tennesse to Atlanta, Georgia - November 1864
- Sherman burned Atlanta and set out on a
terrifying march to the sea

- Shermans army cut a path of destruction across
Georgia that was 60miles wide and 300miles long - The march was intended to create fear and
hardship for the people of the South

- Sherman waged total war on everything!
- Not only against enemy troops, but against
anything that supported the enemy - His troops tore up railroad lines
- Destroyed crops
- Burned and looted towns

- He reached Savannah in Dec 1864
- Then marched north into the Carolinas
- His goal was to join Grants troops in Virginia

- Shermans march also increased the size of the
Union army - 19,000 slaves left Georgia plantations and
followed the Union army to freedom

- In Virginia Grant pursued Lees army
- Grants plan was to keep attacking Lee despite
the number of Union casualties - Lee was running out of men and supplies

maneuvered (moved) them around brilliantly!

- Lee realized he could hold out no longer.
- He sent President Davis a note to leave Richmond
- Confederate leaders left and burnt anything that
could be used against them by the Union

- Lincoln visited Richmond, Virginia to see his
victory - African Americans cheered for him

- Lee fled west of Richmond
- He knew it was hopeless
- He sent a note to Grant that he was ready to
surrender

- April 9, 1865 Lee and Grant met in the small
Virginia town of Appomattox court House to
arrange the surrender - Grant offered generous terms of surrender
