Title: Its All About Exposure
1Its All About Exposure!
- Katrina Harris
- Della Davidson Elementary
- Oxford, MS
2What is exposure?
- Exposure is bringing something to light and
making it accessible!
3Why is there a need for exposure?
- No matter where you teach, you will have students
that will only see the world through your eyes
and of course through MTV and Disney Channel.
4Infusing the Arts and Test Scores
- Studies from the Mississippi Arts Commissions
Whole School Initiative found - You can help improve literacy skills in line with
state expectations and provide reinforcements
through infusing art activities. - Students in WSI schools achieved proficiency in
literacy as well as if not slightly better than
both the state average for all Mississippi
schools and a set matched comparison schools.
5What I have found!
- If your school is incorporating the WSI in
teaching the core subjects, your students are
definitely benefiting from weaving in the arts to
your instruction. - If your school is not a part of the WSI, that
does not mean you can not incorporated arts in
order to reach students who have not thrived in
the classroom and stretch those students who
generally do well. - Having students directly involved will develop
students that are interested in learning.
6My goal as a teacher
- I want to reinforce the competencies taught
without it being a worksheet review. - I want to expose students to as many forms of
cultural experiences as possible. - I want them to travel in my classroom through
our novels and our history lessons. - Because of our travels, I want their vocabulary
to broaden and also be able to use these words in
context.

8The Black Stallionby Walter Farley
- Summary Alec Ramsey and the Black Stallion are
the only two survivors of a shipwreck. While
stranded on a deserted island, the boy and the
horse develop a deep and special bond. After
being rescued, the boy takes the horse home to
New York, where he tames him, as much as the
Black will be tamed, and prepares him for the
world of horse racing.
