  • Based on prior experiences regarding the Local
    Multiregional Operational Programme in Objective
    1 regions, and the URBAN 2000-2006 initiative
  • These actions are integrated with all other
    action lines included in the Regional Operational
    Programmes.
  • National requires 344.66 million Euros (ERDF)

  • This initiative is targeted at the economic,
    social and environmental regeneration of cities
    and neighbourhoods in crisis, in order to promote
    a sustainable urban development.

  • In this period, URBAN offered grants to
  • Europe 116 cities
  • Spain 31 cities
  • Two operational programmes were carried out in
    Spain
  • a) First programme 1994-1999 affected 17 cities
  • b) Second programme 1997-1999 affected 12
    municipalities
  • Within the REGIS (peripheral areas) Community
    initiative, two URBAN projects were carried out
    by the two province capitals in the Canary Islands

  • a) Goals
  • Promoting the preparation and implementation of
    innovating strategies encouraging a sustainable
    economic and social regeneration of populations
    and small and medium sized cities, or of
    neighbourhoods going through difficult periods in
    large cities.
  • Improving and exchanging knowledge and
    experiences on regeneration and sustainable urban
    development in the European Union.
