FAQ About Triage
  • What Information Should Caller Have?
  • See Preliminary Tissue Screening Questions
  • How Long Does a Call Take?
  • Anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes depending on the
    medical history
  • How does a Tissue Referral Differ from an Organ
    Referral?
  • The same demographic information is gathered.
However, on Tissue Referrals more medical history
is gathered and the request to not release the
    deceased script is given.

5
FAQ About Triage Continued
  • Why Do We Ask the Caller Not to Release the Body
    to the Funeral Home?
  • Only asked on Tissue Cases that are not ME cases
  • If body is picked up body could be embalmed,
    could present transportation issues, could
    present cooling issues
  • We are NOT asking the caller to keep the body
from going to the ME office only the Funeral
    Home.
  • Why Does Someone Have to Call the Hospital Back
    on Tissue and Eye Cases?
  • Triage and Family Services are two separate
    departments with different skill sets
  • Why Does StatLine Ask So Many Questions on Cases
    that are Rule Outs?
  • This information is our computer system is
required. OneLegacy uses some of this information
    for reporting purposes.

6
Family Services
  • Evaluates initial information given to Triage
  • Completes advanced medical screening with RN to
    determine eligibility for donation
  • If deceased is eligible, sets up case to approach
    next-of-kin

7
Screening Criteria
  • Defined by FDA, AATB and EBAA
  • Assessment of potential donor for
  • Infection
  • Trauma
  • High Risk Behavior
  • Signs of HIV or Hepatitis
  • Medical Conditions that exclude tissue
    eligibility

8
RNs Provide
  • Access to patient chart
  • Essential medical information to determine tissue
    eligibility
  • - Most efficient when completed with RN who
    knows the patient the best
  • - Accurate clinical picture, lab values, last
known alive time, pathologies, cooling issues,
    etc.
  • Necessary information prior to offering family
    the opportunity of donation

9
The Approach
  • Attempted as soon as patients potential for
    donation is determined
  • May be completed at the hospital if the NOK is
    still there
  • If the NOK has left the hospital, the approach is
    completed as soon as possible
  • Once contact is made with the NOK, timing issues
    regarding donation are discussed

10
Approach Technique
  • Approach Coordinator advocates for both the donor
    family and donation recipients
  • Helps the donor family understand the impact
    tissue donation has on recipients
  • Helps the donor family understand the rare
opportunity they have to significantly change the
lives of recipients and their families

11
What We Need to Approach
  • Access to the NOK at the hospital if they are
    still there
  • Accurate NOK contact information
  • Any alternate contact numbers cell phones
  • Any other information that helps us contact NOK
    as quickly as possible

12
Outcome of the approach
  • NOK may decline donation, in which case the
hospital and funeral home are notified of the
    familys decision
  • If NOK consents, legal informed consent is
obtained on a recorded phone line.
  • A medical and social history questionnaire is
completed with someone who knew the patient well
    (over a recorded phone line)
  • Phone call takes 30-45 minutes to complete
  • Consent must be obtained within 18 hours from the
time of death or last known to be alive time

13
Consent Notification
  • Appropriate hospital personnel are notified of
the consent and are informed to expect additional
    phone calls regarding recovery
  • Funeral home personnel are also notified of the
consent and that recovery will be taking place at
    the hospital
  • OneLegacy recovery coordinators receive all legal
    paperwork and coordinate the recovery

14
FAQs
  • Why do we ask the RN if the family has expressed
interest in donation when we have been asked not
    to bring up the topic?
  • How can screenings be done in a faster way?
  • Why do we need to know so much information about
    the patient?
  • Why do we ask to speak to the NOK at the
    hospital?
  • Why do we call the hospital back so many times?
  • Why cant you come to the hospital to speak to
    the family?

15
