1 Building Effective Supports for Family Caregivers
- The Georgia Quality Care Network
- Amy Tribble
- Director of State Initiatives
- Gayle Alston
- Director of Community Initiatives
- Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving
- Georgia Southwestern State University
2Learning ObjectivesParticipants will
- Learn how the Rosalynn Carter Institute built
statewide coalitions to address caregiver issues. - Learn how RCI is mobilizing the CARE-NETs to
promote evidence-based programs across the state. - Learn about tools that support dissemination of
evidence-based programs in communities.
3Coalitions
- Coalitions are one of the cornerstones for
creating successful change within a community.
They represent an array of local interests and
bring together organizations and individuals to
build a power base that works to influence social
change of a mutual concern. - Wisconsin clearing house
4RCI Partnered with the Agencies on Aging to
Create CARE-NETs across the State of Georgia
5CARE-NETs
- Bring together professional and family caregivers
as well as agency administrators and
policy-makers. - CARE-NETs function independently, setting their
goals and priorities based on regional needs and
opportunities. - Quarterly Liaison meetings offer opportunities to
share training and information and develop
statewide initiatives.
6Georgia Quality Care Network
- The GQCN is a state-wide network of agencies,
coalitions and other stakeholders committed to
improving the quality of home and community-based
services in Georgia.
7Georgia Quality Care Network
- The twelve state-wide CARE-NETs are the
foundation for the GQCN. - Expanding the partnership
- Georgia Extension
- Area Health Education Center
- HealthCare Georgia Foundation
8Why Evidence Based Programs
- One of the elements of Quality Care is
Effectiveness. - Because of rigorous testing, we can be sure EBPs
will be effective if implemented with fidelity.
9Challenges
- Resistance to added expectations.
- We already use Evidence-based practices.
- Entering unfamiliar territory.
- Moving from independent CARE-NETs to a Statewide
Coalition
10Health Care Georgia Foundation
- 2-Year Grant provides basis for development of
State-wide network with CARE-NETS as key members - Workforce Development to provide quality supports
to caregivers is the focus of our efforts - Bringing EBPs to the long-term, home and
community workforces is a critical element of
this. - First step is to increase awareness and
readiness of providers in GA to adopt EBPs.
11Increase Awareness and Readiness for EBP
- National Summit
- Quarterly Liaison Meetings
- Individual CARE-NET meetings
- Include new partners during planning process.
- Provide opportunities for communication with EBP
researchers.
12Moving Forward
- Measure Knowledge and use of EBP through a
state-wide survey. - RCI identified four EBP for implementation
- Savvy Caregiver
- Win-a-Step-Up
- Care Transitions
- Powerful Tools for Caregivers
13Moving Forward
- Train the trainer sessions to be conducted
statewide. - CARE-NETs to sponsor trainings/assist in
identification of participants. - CARE-NETs to determine most appropriate training
modality for their region. - Evaluation Post Survey to measure increase in
knowledge and use of EBP interventions for
caregiver workforce.
14Practices seem to be "influenced by fads and
fashions that are adopted over enthusiastically,
implemented inadequately, then discarded
prematurely in favor of the latest trend.
Walshe Rundall, 2001
15Quality Supports for CaregiversNot a Fad
- Caregivers deserve effective interventions.
- Evidence based practices are our best hope for
effective interventions. - Effective and successful implementation of
evidence based practices requires a paradigm
shift in the way we select, train for, implement
and evaluate new programs. - We begin to become the agents for change by
accessing and mastering the tools for successful
implementation.
