Title: Euro CSM: Brussels 2006
1Euro CSM Brussels 2006
- Campus Ministry Program Development
2Creating a Missional Community with Christ at its
Center
- That which was from the beginning, which we have
heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we
have looked upon, and our hands have handled,
concerning the Word of life - (we) bear witness and declare to you that eternal
life which was with the Father - That you also may have fellowship with us and
truly our fellowship is with the Father and with
His Son Jesus Christ I John 11,2,3
3Making Jesus the Heart of it all
- Intimate relationship with Jesus lies at the
heart of the New Testament church - Proclamation of eternal life through personal
relationship with Christ - Invitation to others to join our community which
has Jesus at its center bringing us into
relationship with the Triune God
4The Five-Fold Ministry
- Flows out of the early churchs experience in
Acts (240-42) - The Risen Christ is now with them and all that
happens ie prayer, worship, discipleship,
fellowship, and witness arises out of their
relationship with Him - Apart from Him, even the 5-fold ministry is
nothing!
5The church at Antioch The missional church is
born
- Multicultural, multiethnic, socially diverse
community - Prophets and Teachers Divine enablements to do
ministry - Ministered to the Lord and fasted prayer and
worship in the community around Jesus - The Holy Spirit spoke Saul and Barnabas sent out
as the churchs first missionaries - A prophetic, praying and worshipping community
gathered around Jesus will always become a
missional community
6Characteristics unique to campus ministry
- Time is short Students arent around long
- Processes to reach, train, and release students
into ministry must be efficient - Students attract students
- Students like being in homes
- Students like food
7Ministry occurs within the distinct rhythms of
the academic year
- Learn to flow with it, benefit from it, and not
fight it - Periods of intense activity welcome week, class
registration, exams - With intermittent periods of rest holiday
breaks, semester breaks, Summer
8Salmon Run in the Spring
- Take advantage of the natural flow
- Spring-early Summer Planning
- Welcome Week Outreach
- Oct-Dec Affiliation/relationship building
- Christmas break REST!!!
- Spring Semester Leadership development
- Holidays Seasonal outreaches, mission trips
9Stages of Ministry Development
10Pioneering
- Discouragement is the great enemy
- Spiritual warfare is intense
- Build as many relationships as possible, wherever
possible - Spend much time in prayer and worship care for
your spiritual life - Try to respond to what the Lord is saying to you
in your personal situation - Care for your personal relationships marriage,
family and children, support network
11Small Group
- Relationships are intimate, everyone knows
everyone - Inward focus can be a great enemy
- Begin to disciple leaders and create small group
structure
- Develop resources in different areas eg worship,
literature, outreach
12Medium group
- Continue to develop intimate relationships
- People can begin to feel unconnected
- Primary leaders cant care for everybody
themselves - Must develop an effective leadership development
strategy - Must grow an efficient small group structure if
you dont delegate pastoral care to a growing
corps of effective leaders, you cant grow beyond
this point
13Large Group with Multiple Staff
- Need to train or recruit additional staff
- Learn to care for and support staff
- Learn to function as a team, create workable
division of labor - Primary leaders role changes completely
majority of time with staff, much less directly
with students - Avoid the pitfall of staff doing all the ministry
and taking initiative and ownership away from the
students
14Multiple Staff Group with Internship
- Begin to address the many issues related to
recruiting, training, and sending full-time
workers - Negotiate balances between the need to give
interns ministry responsibility and the needs of
the students - Increase commitment to pioneer new ministries
15The Challenge of Changing Roles
- As groups grow, leaders roles change continually
- Only rarely are people gifted and comfortable in
all these different roles - The transition to multiple staff is particularly
difficult why most groups have trouble growing
past this point - The inability or unwillingness to share power and
delegate real responsibility is one of the
greatest factors limiting growth

19Some thoughts
- Spend as much time as you can with students, not
just in the office - Try to limit the days where all 3 segments are
involved in ministry - Build adequate time into your schedule for other
commitments rel with SFC, AGWM, support base,
etc.
20Leadership Development
- Committed member of small group people learn to
lead small groups by being in them - Core group time for personal issues,
accountability, deeper sharing, prayer - Discipleship class biblical teaching
- Modeled on Jesus with the 12, the 3, and His
times of instruction to larger groups
