Title: LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE TOPIC
1LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE TOPIC
Latitude and longitude are used to pinpoint the
position of a place on the surface of the Earth.
These lines form an imaginary grid over the
surface.

The Equator, which goes around the widest part of
the earth, is the main line of latitude. It
divides the earth into two HEMI-SPHERES or halves
- the northern hemisphere and the southern
hemisphere.
Other lines of latitude are drawn parallel to the
Equator. Therefore they go around the earth and
give the position north and south of the equator.
They are measured in degrees.

NORTH POLE
- The North Pole is at 90 N and the South Pole is
at 90 S. - Other important lines of latitude are the-
- Arctic Circle
- Tropic of Cancer
- Tropic of Capricorn
- Antarctic Circle.

7LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE TOPIC
Lines of longitude are drawn from the North to
the South Pole.
The most important line or prime meridian is also
called the Greenwich Meridian because it passes
through Greenwich, near London. Lines of
longitude go up and down on the globe and tell
you how far east or west a place is from
Greenwich.
8LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE TOPIC
What would happen if you were to travel east
until you reached 180 E, and a friend travelled
west until they reached 180 W?
You would both end up in the same place! (but one
would be a day ahead of the other! ) Longitude
180 E and longitude 180 W are the same. This
line is known as the International Date Line.

Using the Student atlas page 114-115 find the
Equator and then the Greenwich Meridian (it is
not named, so just look for longitude 0 .)
1. Which continents are located entirely in a)
the northern hemisphere. b) the southern
hemisphere. 2. Which two continents are partly
in the northern and southern hemispheres? 3.
Name a country in each of the following a) the
northern hemisphere b) the southern
hemisphere c) the western hemisphere d) the
eastern hemisphere

12LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE TOPIC
- Extension
- Name three countries found
- along the equator
- b) in both the northern and western hemispheres
- c) in both the southern and eastern hemispheres

This is the end of the latitude/longitude
topic! You now have a homework task on the work
you have been taught.
