We Started out the Year at the West Virginia
State Fair
  • We kicked off West Virginia Premise ID Program in
August of 2004 at our West Virginia State Fair
where we signed up over 200 farmers that first
    week.
  • We reached producers from across the state of
    West Virginia

Trained in September by Feds
  • In September of last fall we were trained by the
feds on the National Animal Identification
    System.
  • They trained us on how to use the Premise
    Registration System.
  • We started using the Premise Registration System
    right after we were trained.
  • Producers filled out Premise ID Forms and we
processed them and entered them into the system.

In October and November
  • We attended County Farm Bureau Meetings and
Extension meetings across the state educating
producers about the Premise ID Program and the
    upcoming Animal ID Program.
  • We also attended the state Farm Bureau Conference
where we reached farmers and producers from all
over the state of West Virginia.

7
Assigning Premise ID Numbers
  • After assigning Premise ID numbers to producers
we sent them a certificate, two wallet size
cards, and a thank you letter from Commissioner
    Douglass.
  • We designed these tools to be used only for the
    Premise ID Program.

every producer who has a Premise ID assigned with
the state of WV, and are handed out at all of the
    fairs and festivals.

  • Designed and used our own unique Animal ID
    brochures.
  • Used USDA Animal and Premise ID Brochures

14
West Virginia University Extension Agents
  • The West Virginia University Extension Service
has been a great asset to our Premise ID Program
    in West Virginia.
  • We provide each of our extension agents with a
GPS Unit so that they can obtain GPS readings for
    the farms in their county.
  • If we have a problem with an address in the
system, the extension agents are always willing
to help us in any way they can in getting their
    producers a premise id number.

15
Overcoming Problems
  • These Extension Agents have helped us overcome
problems with address and other problems we have
encountered due to 911 addressing issues.

16
Kicking off 2005
  • At the beginning of 2005 we attended a series of
dinner meetings in conjunction with the West
    Virginia University Extension Service. We
educated producers at fifteen different locations
throughout the state of West Virginia.
  • County Extension Agents set up these meetings in
    their counties.

17
Hands On Activities
  • We held a few hands on activities this summer and
spring to let producers see and use ID Equipment.
  • We held these workshops at farms and fairs
throughout the state of West Virginia.

18
Huttonsville Prison Farm
  • Here we tagged over 200 head of cows and calves
    at the farm.
  • RFID tags are being used to track cows and calves
for production records and as part of a
    multi-year study of weaning systems.

19
Putnam County Fair
  • State Veterinarian, Dr. Joe Starcher, tags calves
    at Putnam County Fair.
  • These tags were put in all the feeder calves ears
for their fair at their spring weigh-in.
  • The Putnam County Fair required each youth
exhibiting at the fair to have a Premise ID
    number.

20
Farm in Lewis County
  • A hands on workshop was held in the central part
of the state so producers could see how easy the
ID Equipment really is to use.
  • Tagged 36 head of cows and calves.

21
All Market Animals Tagged at State Fair
  • All animals for tagged for tracking
  • We tagged
  • STEERS
  • HOGS
  • GOATS
  • LAMBS
  • Verification of ownership
  • Increased efficiency at weigh-in and facilitated
    class assignments

22
Fairs and Festivals
  • We attended 12 fairs and festivals throughout the
state of West Virginia this summer promoting
    Premise and Animal ID.
  • We had a animal id display trailer and a tabletop
display to put outside for people to pick up
    literature and to get information.

West Virginia has registered 7500 premises.
  • We registered all premises on a voluntary basis.
  • No batchloading
  • Farmers/Producers registered with WV by filling
out a form and we entered their information into
the database and processed the forms.

27
Southeastern Livestock Network
  • Over the past year we have been involved with the
Southeastern Livestock Network on the Cow Pilot
    Project.
  • We had a very successful Cow Sale at a livestock
market in the central part of West Virginia.

28
Cow Pilot Project
  • At the cow sale we tagged 138 cows with RFID
tags, and showed producers the tags and the
    equipment used.
  • When the cows left the sale ring they walked
through a panel reader where farmers and buyers
could see how this equipment worked in the market
    place.
