2007 Lisa Hoyt, Director
212 Principles of Re-EDucation
- The 12 principles of Re-Education are the
foundation in which we make all of our decisions
at Renton Academy - It is how we structure our program, develop
curriculum, implement interventions, communicate
with our teams and support our families.
3- The best way to describe Renton Academy is in the
words and images of our students, families and
staff. The following illustrate to you how they
have experienced the 12 principles in their lives
at Renton Academy.
41. Life is to be Lived Now
5Life Is To Be Lived Now
- We strive to make each hour of every day a
purposeful time that allows for sustained
involvement in significant learning and living. - Lisa Hoyt, Director

- The best thing about Renton Academy is that you
can tell the staff really care - Renton Academy 10th grade student
9Trust is Essential
10Trust is Essential
- I want to thank you (teacher/counselors) for
your help this yearI want to let you know that
you guys have truly done your job. I love you
guys. Thanks for everything. I will never
forget you. - - Renton Academy 12th Grade Student
11Trust is Essential
12Trust is Essential
- I learn best when can I get along with my
teacher. - -Renton Academy 8th Grade Student
13Time is an Ally
14Time is an Ally
- I have continued to work on trust throughout the
quarter which has been something that was tough
for me for a long, long time. I feel that I have
done a great job at meeting my goals this
quarter. - Renton Academy 8th grade student
15Time is an ally
16Time is an ally
- - Renton Academy 1st High School Graduate,
speaking to the incoming 9th grade class - The reality is that high school is not like you
see on TV. It will try you mentally, physically,
and emotionally. You will want to drop out and
give up completely. But if you stick through it,
you will be given a lot more chances and
opportunities in life. That is my advice to
you.
17Time is an ally
184. Self-Control can be Taught
19Self-Control can be Taught
- I think Ive progressed much further in
participation, I do more of my work. I have
noticed that I do not talk out as much and I am
keeping my behavior appropriate - Renton Academy 6th grade student
20Self-Control can be Taught
21Self Control Can be Taught
- I have worked the hardest on good decisions. I
know that my decisions effect other people. I
think Renton Academy has helped if I didnt
come to this school I would still be knocking
over chairs. - -Renton Academy 6th Grade Student
225. Competence Makes a Difference
23Competence Makes a Difference
- I have learned that controlling my behavior
helps create better situations in my life. I
know that admitting my own mistakes will make me
a better person. I always choose to make amends
to those that Ive harmed because I wouldnt want
them to the same thing to me. I have learned
that you should forgive people. - -Renton Academy 8th grade student
24Competence Makes a Difference
25Competence Makes a Difference
- When I first came to behavior programs I was
always a follower not a leader. This never
worked for me. It was always getting me in
trouble. Mr. Hall told me that sometimes friends
can be helpful and sometimes they can be hurtful.
I realized that following the crowd at times was
not getting me anywhere. - -Renton Academy 7th Grade Student

26Competence Makes a Difference
276. Intelligence can be taught
28Intelligence Can be Taught
- My best memory this year is my first day of
transition to Dimmit. Mr. Oliver and I drove
over to Dimmit. He introduced me to the teachers
at Dimmit, showed me where my class was, and told
me the expectations. When Ms. Reinhart handed
out the work, Mr. Oliver took the paper and
showed it to me. I was nervous that I couldnt
do the work, but I saw how easy it was. Their
work was the same as our work at Renton Academy.
I then knew that everything would work out. - -Renton Academy 7th Grade Student
29Intelligence Can Be Taught
30Intelligence Can Be Taught
- I was always nervous about reading in front of
people, but now I am proud of how I can read. I
read really good. I can read in front of the
class! - -Renton Academy 7th Grade Student
317. Feelings should be nurtured
32Feelings should be nurtured
- I feel that the team at Renton Academy has
treated my son in a respectful manner in a
manner that assumes that he will step up to the
plate when he is treated with respect. I have to
say that the teen who entered the program this
past fall is coming out of the program a young
man! Ive always hoped that he would have great
progress but truthfully over the years Ive given
up a lost of hope and expectation girding myself
for the inevitable disappointments that have
always come our way. Thank you for treating him
like a human being instead of a burden. Thank you
for talking to him like hes deserving of
respect. While the school works as a team,
please give my thanks to Miss Elena, who has gone
above and beyond in mentoring and supporting my
son. I know that in the future, you will be able
to help other students like youve helped mine. - -Renton Academy Parent
33Feelings should be nurtured
34Feelings Should be Nurtured
- The staff at Renton Academy is here to help
kids. They talk to you about your feelings and
your behavior. They help you learn about the
community and give you an education. I have
learned how to control my body, my words and my
feelings. - -Renton Academy 7th Grade Student
358. The Group is Important
36The Group is Important
- I became a leader throughout this year. I
helped run goal group and became part of the
group. I am very proud of these things. - -Renton Academy 7th Grade Student
37The Group is Important
38The Group is Important
- Once others have forgiven you it is easier to
forgive yourself. - -Renton Academy 8th Grade Student
39The Group is Important

46The Body is the Armature of the Self
47The Body is the Armature of the Self
- We use physical challenges within our program to
engage our students intellectually, emotionally,
socially, soulfully and physically. We do this
sort of thing to give them a greater awareness of
what they are capable of doing. It is an exercise
in self-discovery. - -Renton Academy Teacher/Counselor
48The Body is the Armature of the Self
49The Body is the Armature of the Self
- We went on a hike during our camping trip and I
walked the whole five miles. I never thought I
could do that. I wanted to stop but everyone
encouraged me and I just kept going. - -Renton Academy 10th Grade Student
50The Body is the Armature of the Self
5111. Communities are Important
52Communities are Important
- My son has been in several different schools,
however, Renton Academy is home for him. I know
this because in the midst of his running away,
and his battle with marijuana...he could have
gone anywhere and disappear in the streets,
however, something was always driving him back
into Renton Academy. It is the only place that he
knows where he is always received with open arms
by both the students and the staff. He knows that
Renton Academy will make him accountable for his
behavior but he also knows that he will find
understanding without judgment. As a parent,
especially when he ran, I knew he would be found
sooner than later because of his love for Renton
Academy drove him out of hiding and into the
school. How many schools can claim that fact? And
that can only happen, in an environment that is
supportive and safe. Renton Academy meets that
criteria. - - Renton Academy Parent

54Communities are Important
55Communities are Important
- KND kids changed, we started out rough
- KND kids learned even when it was tough
- At Renton Academy we have lots of joy
- At Renton Academy we have lots of fun
- At Renton Academy we do lots of sums (we do math)
- It was a rough start from the beginning
- But we grew together, learning and living
- Clouded by anger and frustration we started the
year - The skies, our eyes, are now clear without fear
- -Excerpt from a poem written by the KND class

62The principles themselves seem, indeed are,
simple enough that young people have a
tremendous desire to learn and to do well that
their feelings are intrinsically valid and quite
as important as their thinking that destructive
and self-defeating behavior must be faced that
young people can help each other sort things out
and arrive at good choices that the world is
rich in things to learn that life is to be
savored at each moment and that decent, caring
adults are absolutely essential in the lives of
children, if these children are to grow up strong
in body, quick of mind, generous of
spirit. --Nicholas Hobbs
63Please finalize our Name and our Mascot
- We like the name Renton Academy. We are proud
of my school. We came up with a mascot that had
every color of the Circle of Courage in it. That
is our level system. - Please make Renton Academy our name and the
Renton Academy Rockhopper our mascot. -
