Applying for Financial Aid
  • Two Items are required for you to begin the
    Financial Aid process.

  • Remember it is Free to fill out the Free
    Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) so
    if you get a site that charges you for filling it
    out you are at the wrong site.
  • Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov

Tips for Completing the FAFSA
  • Make sure both you and one of your parents has a
    PIN
  • Even if your taxes are not complete you can file
    the FAFSA by estimation your income and taxes for
    2008.
  • File it early to meet the March 2nd priority
    deadline.

Your Dependency Status
  • You can file the FAFSA without your parents
    income if you can answer yes to one of the
    following questions
  • Were you born before January 1, 1986?
  • During the 2009-2010 school year will you be
    working on a masters or doctorate?
  • As of today, are you married?
  • Do you have dependents? (children of your own)
  • Are both of your parents deceased or are you or
    were you a ward of the court?
  • Are you currently serving on active duty in the
    US Armed forces?
  • Are you a veteran of the US Armed forces?

Your Dependency Status
  • As of today, are you an emancipated minor?
  • As of today, are you in legal guardianship as
    determined by the courts.
  • At any time on or after July 1, 2008 did your
    high school or school district homeless liaison
    determine that you were and unaccompanied youth
    who was homeless?
  • At any time on or after July 1, 2008 did the
    director of an emergency shelter program
    determine that you were an unaccompanied youth
    who was homeless?
  • An any time on or after July 1, 2008 did the
    director of a runaway or homeless youth basic
    center or transitional living program determine
    that you were an unaccompanied youth who was
    homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of
    being homeless.

Dislocated Worker
  • Your parent lost their job
  • Have been laid off or received a lay-off notice
  • Receiving Unemployment benefits as a result of
    being laid off
  • Are self-employed but now unemployed due to
    economic conditions or natural disaster.
  • If a person quits their job, even if they are
    receiving unemployment benefits, they are NOT
    considered a dislocated worker.

Academic Scholarship
Based on Cumulative GPA through Fall 2008
  • New Applicants
  • Even if you have not received an academic
    scholarship in the past, you could received one
    for the first time if you qualify.
  • Renewal Applicants
  • If you are a Freshman now you need a 3.00 GPA to
    renew
  • If you are a sophomore or Junior now you need a
    3.45 GPA to renew.

Servant-Leader Scholarship
  • You can apply! Not just for new students.
  • Available to all students, not in connection with
    SLS
  • 2,000 Scholarship
  • March 2nd deadline (or first 150 to apply)
  • ON-LINE PROCESS On-line application with essay
    questions. Fill it out, print it out and mail or
    drop it of at the Office of Financial Aid.

Christian Ministry Dependent Grant
  • 2,000 Renewable with a GPA of 2.5
  • Renewal applicant Must complete and sign
    application.
  • No parent signature required
  • New applicant If you think you may qualify,
    fill out application with parent signature and
    doctrinal statement.

Ministry Matching Grant
  • Deadline June 1st (or until funds are exhausted)
  • Check from Christian Ministry and application
    must be received by deadline.
  • TMC will match up to 2,500.
  • Read application carefully.

Speak to your Christian Ministry now to ensure
the availability of funds.

Outside Scholarship Matching Grant
  • TMC will match up to 1000 per student
  • Match will be awarded as funds remain, however
    scholarship check must be received by TMC before
    the end of the Add/Drop period.
  • Cumulative GPA of a least 2.5 is required.
  • TMC will not match federal or state aid, or funds
    awarded based on a random winning or prize.

John R. Dunkin Alumni Scholarship
  • Scholarship for Children of Alumni.
  • 1000 Award for up to 4 years.
  • Child of a graduate (with undergrad degree
    conferred) from Los Angeles Baptist College or
    The Masters College
  • Full-time Students
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5

Work Study
  • Awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Amounts 2,500 and 5,000
  • Based on need you must complete the FAFSA.
  • Job fair in August includes on and off campus
    employment opportunities.

Current Work Study Employees
  • Must complete financial aid promptly to ensure
    available funds for your work study position next
    year.
  • W-2s in campus mailboxes by the end of January.
  • List work study earnings on FAFSA as part of
    income and on Worksheet C.

Speak to your current employer to ensure same
position for next year.

Cal Grant
  • Must complete FAFSA and GPA Verification by March
    2.
  • 2008/2009 Cal grant amount 9,708
  • The competitive Cal Grant may be cut for the
    09-10 school year.
  • Watch the news!!!

Cal Grant
If you dont have a Cal Grant, and dont think
youll qualify, apply anyway. It just takes
filing the FAFSA and stopping by the Registrars
Office, and could mean a lot of aid.

Additional Aid
  • www.fastweb.com. The FastWeb scholarship search,
    probably the most recommended search for outside
    scholarships.
  • www.collegeboard.org, Offers a fairly basic
    search profile and accurate results.
  • Local Chamber of Commerce.

Additional scholarships can also be found from
local businesses, civic organizations, and
parents places of employment.

Communication
  • Contact the Financial Aid Office with any
    questions _at_ extension 3400, or stop in the
    office.
  • Let the Financial Aid Office know about any
    changes that happen in your situation, ie
    housing plans, parents employment, etc
  • Inform the Financial Aid Office about any outside
    aid that you will be receiving.

Cut out the middle man and talk to your parents
about the information presented in this workshop!
