Life Before Birth
  • After fertilization, zygote forms.
  • Cells divide rapidly forming organs
  • Also forms the placenta- an organ that nourishes
    the developing baby inside mother.
  • Baby is inside the amniotic sac.
  • Amniotic fluid cushions and protects the baby.

First 8 weeks
  • Baby called an embryo
  • Umbilical cord develops- connects new baby to
    placenta
  • Contains 3 blood vessels for transport to the
    baby
  • Mothers and babys blood never mix
  • Scar from umbilical cord is navel or belly
    button

8 wks on
  • Baby is now called a fetus
  • At 12 wks, all organs have been formed
  • At 5 mos. Mom can feel baby move
  • Delivery occurs at around 9 months

Environmental influences
  • Expectant moms shouldnt smoke, drink, or do any
    kind of drugs.
  • Expectant moms should seek medical care and
    maintain a proper diet.
  • Essential nutrients include folic acid, calcium
    and iron

Smoking during pregnancy
  • Smoking hinders moms ability to absorb O2
  • Nicotine and other dangerous substances deprive
    developing child of nutrients
  • Some babies are born premature or at a low birth
    weight.

Alcohol Use During Pregnancy
  • Can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
  • Can cause mental and physical defects and CNS
    handicaps

Drug Use During Pregnancy
  • Can cause developing baby to not receive proper
    nutrition.
  • Can cause miscarriage, or other dangerous
    conditions.
  • Baby can be born addicted to drugs and experience
    learning disabilities
