Background
Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) is used in many
hemodynamic (blood) flow applications that need
non- intrusive measurement of the flow
parameters. With high resolution LDV, the blood
flow in modelled arteries can be measured very
accurately to provide data on the time varying
wall shear stresses a factor involved in the
onset of arterial disease.

Objective
To construct a high resolution micro LDV to
measure arterial wall shear stresses on cells in
vitro while observing the cells with a Laser
Scanning Confocal Microscope (LSCM).

Research To Be Carried Out
A high resolution 2-D LDV will be set up to test
the size of the measuring volume. This will be
used with a new hemodynamic flow rig to measure
the arterial wall shear stresses.

Expected Outcomes
Due to the high tolerances in the construction of
the LDV, we expect to achieve a measuring volume
with a diameter less than 10 microns. With this
we will be able to obtain very high resolution
arterial wall shear stresses.
