Analysis of John 31-7
  • Nicodemus Mentioned on three different
occasions in the Gospel of John.
  • (John 31) There was a man of the Pharisees,
named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews
  • (John 750-51) Nicodemus saith unto them, (he
that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him,
    and know what he doeth?
  • (John 1939-40) And there came also Nicodemus,
which at the first came to Jesus by night, and
brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an
hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of
Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the
spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

4
Analysis of John 31-7
  • Nicodemus proclaims that We Know that Jesus was
    a teacher come from God.
  • Truly impressed with the miracles and no doubt
familiar with this kingdom of God that Jesus went
    about teaching.
  • The Pharisees as well as most Jews were
anticipating the coming of the Kingdom of God!
  • Looking for a physical kingdom
  • Jesus answers Nicodemus questions concerning the
    Kingdom of God

(John 33) Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the
kingdom of God.
(Luke 1720-21) And when he was demanded of the
Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come,
he answered them and said, The kingdom of God
cometh not with observation Neither shall they
say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the
kingdom of God is within you.
(John 1836) My kingdom is not of this world if
my kingdom were of this world, then would my
servants fight, that I should not be delivered to
the Jews but now is my kingdom not from hence.
(Matt 423) And Jesus went about all Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the
gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of
sickness and all manner of disease among the
people.
(Matt 935) And Jesus went about all the cities
and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and
preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing
every sickness and every disease among the
people.
5
Analysis of John 31-7
  • This Perplexed Nicodemus The kingdom of God was
promised to the children of Abraham
  • The promise of Abraham
  • (Gen 123) And I will bless them that bless
thee, and curse him that curseth thee and in
thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
  • (Gen 177) And I will establish my covenant
between me and thee and thy seed after thee in
their generations for an everlasting covenant, to
be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

6
Analysis of John 31-7
  • The Jews had the concept of being born into the
nation of God by a physical birth
  • Children of Abraham
  • (Matt 38-9) Bring forth therefore fruits meet
for repentance And think not to say within
yourselves, We have Abraham to our father for I
say unto you, that God is able of these stones to
    raise up children unto Abraham.
  • (John 839) They answered and said unto him,
Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If
ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works
    of Abraham.

7
Analysis of John 31-7
  • Christ showed that one was not in the kingdom of
God by a physical birth but by a spiritual birth
  • (John 36-7) That which is born of the flesh is
flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is
spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye
    must be born again.
  • John says
  • (John 111-13) He came unto his own, and his own
received him not. But as many as received him,
to them gave he power to become the sons of God,
even to them that believe on his name Which were
born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh,
nor of the will of man, but of God.

8
Analysis of John 31-7
  • We are children of Abraham and heirs to the
promise by spiritual seed and not physical
  • (Rom 228-29) For he is not a Jew, which is one
outwardly neither is that circumcision, which is
outward in the flesh But he is a Jew, which is
one inwardly and circumcision is that of the
heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter
whose praise is not of men, but of God.
  • (Gal 314) That the blessing of Abraham might
come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ that
we might receive the promise of the Spirit
    through faith.

9
Analysis of John 31-7
  • (Gal 316) Now to Abraham and his seed were the
promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of
many but as of one, And to thy seed, which is
    Christ.

10
Analysis of John 31-7
  • (Gal 326-29) For ye are all the children of God
by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as
have been baptized into Christ have put on
Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is
neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor
female for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And
if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed,
and heirs according to the promise.

As opposed to by nature!
11
Analysis of John 31-7
  • The new teaching of Christ is that in order to be
a citizen of the Kingdom of God, you will need to
    be born again spiritually

them gave he power to become the sons of God,

    destroyed

30
In baptism we put on Christ
  • (Gal 327) For as many of you as have been
baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
  • By putting on Christ we become a New Creature
  • (2 Cor 517) Therefore if any man be in Christ,
he is a new creature old things are passed away
behold, all things are become new.
  • In baptism we are risen to walk in a newness of
    life
