  his time
• He wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets
• Some of his most famous works include
• Romeo and Juliet

• Simile

SHAKESPEARES LANGUAGE

• He talked in a pattern called IAMBIC PENTAMETER
• The pattern of one unstressed syllable followed
  by a stressed one
• Example Good PILgrim, YOU do WRONG your HAND
  too MUCH
• It is called IAMBIC PENTAMETER because there are
  5 (penta) meters
• METERS are the set of stressed and unstressed
  syllables
• Example Good PIL 1 meter

• In Shakespeares time, (Elizabethan times) there
  were no Dictionaries
• People couple spell however they wanted and
  sometimes made up new words
• Over 2,000 of the words Shakespeare used had not
  been recorded.
• Some words that Shakespeare made that we still
  used today are
• submerged, countless, lonely, and fretful

• Many of Shakespeares expressions have come part
  of our everyday language
• We often use these phrases without even knowing
  that it was originally in one of Shakespeares
  works
• Ex Youll eat us out of house and home if
  youre not careful!

• Sir - respectful form of male
• Madame or Dame - respectful form of female
• Lord - respectful form of male in Royalty
• Lady - respectful form of female in Royalty
• Wench - form of address for serving women, not
  usually meant impolitely
• Wretch - form of endearment for a child
