Mutual Bodily Contact and/or
Rhythmic Sensual Movement
may includeRomantic / Exciting
AtmosphereLights, Music, Beat etc.
6Why Shouldnt Single Christians Dance? Or Go To
The Prom?
- How can we say it is wrong when no passage
specifically forbids it? - World thinks it is an innocent thing.
- Why do some Christians see nothing wrong with
dancing encourage it? - Many know it is wrong want to be able to better
defend their belief.
7Not ALL Dancing Is Wrong
- The Bible contains examples of dance when
rejoicing before God. - Miriam prophetesses danced after deliverance
from Egypt (Ex. 1520) - David danced with all his might when he brought
the ark back to Jerusalem (2 Sam. 614 - There was dancing when the Prodigal Son returned
(Luke 1525)
8Not ALL Dancing Is Wrong
- This dancing cannot be compared with modern
dancing. - always performed by self or with people of the
same gender - no indication of sensuality
- never performed for entertainment or amusement,
only for rejoicing
9Not ALL Dancing Is Wrong
- Some dancing in the Bible is understood to be
wrong. - Children of Israel at the incident of the golden
calf (Ex. 326, 19-25). - Herodias before Herod when her mother asked for
the head of John the Immerser (Matt. 146-8).
10The Appeal Is Sexual
11Sexual Appeal?The World Admits It
Prof. W. C. Wilkerson of Chicago University a
system of means, contrived with more than human
ingenuity, to excite the instinct of sex
action. T. A. Vogner, former supervisor of the
Dancing Academy in CA No woman can waltz well
and waltz virtuously.
12Sexual Appeal?The World Admits It
J. P. Gibson, MD Among those who dance it is
noteworthy that very few girls spend much time
dancing with other girls. Neither do men dance
very much with own wives, nor brothers with their
own sisters... the secret of the popularity of
dancing (or is it a secret) is the exciting,
sexual stimulation resulting from the close
embrace of male and female, whether it be with
music in dancing or without music in petting and
necking.
13The Appeal Is Sexual
- Testimony of The World
- Remove The Sexual And Kill The Dance
- Bodily Contact
- Lewd Movements
- Boys w/ girls
- Stop the Music same actions would be called
petting
14The Appeal Is Sexual
If a young man takes a young girl to the Prom
the parents are proud! If they engage in the
same action in the living room send him home!
15The deeds of the flesh
Galatians 519-21
- Impurity uncleanness thoughts, speech,
actions - Sensuality lasciviousness, indecency,
licentiousness - Fornication illicit sexual intercourse
- Those who practice such things will not inherit
the kingdom of God
16LasciviousnessGreek aselgeia
Passages Gal. 519 1 Pet. 43 Rom. 1313 2
Pet. 27
Defined Unbridled lust wantoness shamelessness
wanton (acts or) manners, as filthy words,
indecent bodily movements, unchaste handling
of males and females (Thayer, p. 79-80)
How Used Sensuality That which leads to or
contributesto lust.
17All that remains of wickedness
James 121
- Any and all activities that promote the deeds of
the flesh should stop. - Comparatively harmless is not the same as
harmless. - We do not compare an activity to MORE sinful
activities to determine whether the activity is
right or wrong. We compare it to the Bible!
18Make no provision for the flesh
Romans 1314
- Someone who doesnt want to marry shouldnt date
someone who doesnt want to become violent
shouldnt lose his temper and someone who
doesnt want to engage in lasciviousness or
fornication shouldnt dance. - Flee fornication (2Timothy 222)
19Do not participate in theunfruitful works of
darkness
Ephesians 511
- Going but not dancing tells everyone you
approve of their activities it certainly does
not expose them. - Non-participation is not as obvious as you might
think. - Non-participation can easily become participation
if we give ourselves the opportunity.
20Walk by the Spirit, and you willnot carry out
the desires of the flesh
Galatians 516
- What are other appeals of dancing?Peer pressure?
Fun? Stimulation? - Do we want those things more than we want to
walk by the Spirit? - Self-control is part of the fruit of the Spirit
(Galatians 523) we need to exercise some.
21Why Do You Want To Dance?
- DANCING IS FUN
- A lot of sins are fun.
- Heb. 1125 Moses resisted the temporary
pleasures of sin.
22Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- THERE IS NO SEXUAL CONNOTATION WITH ME IN
DANCING - Then why dont boys dance with boys?
- Dancing is lust-oriented.
- 1 Pet. 211 we are to abstain from fleshly
lusts.
23Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- DANCING DOESNT AFFECT ME THAT WAY I CAN
HANDLE IT. - Rom. 1415 you may affect someone else that
way. - Will our actions cause a weaker brother or sister
to fall?
24Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- BOYS WILL HAVE THOSE THOUGHTS ANYWAY.
- Maybe so, but you dont throw matches at dynamite
just because it will explode anyway.
25Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- I WONT FIT IN IF I DONT GO EVERYONE ELSE IS
DOING IT. - Matt. 713- it is difficult to get to heaven
sacrifices must be made. - A Christian must stand out from the crowd, not
blend in.
26Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- ILL BE RIDICULED IF I DONT GO.
- Matt. 512 Yes, you probably will.
- 1 Pet. 416 we will suffer sometimes as a
Christian.
27Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- THERE WILL BE CHAPERONES THERE.
- Then that makes it chaperoned sin.
- Chaperones cannot control your thoughts.
28Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- ILL JUST GO AND WATCH.
- If its wrong to dance, why would it be OK to
watch?
29Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- THE BIBLE DOESNT SAY NOT DANCE.
- Gal. 519 In reality, it does.
30Why Do You WantTo Dance?
- BECAUSE I WANT TO, NO MATTER WHAT GOD SAYS.
- This is the only reason to go to the dance.
31Do You See The NeedTo Preach On Dancing?
Homer Hailey It is true that only a minority
of church members dance, and possibly a small
minority but to whatever degree dancing is
tolerated among members of the body, to just that
degree the church tends toward the world, and
allows the spirit of the world to infiltrate it.
32Have You ObeyedThe Gospel?
Hear The Word (Rom. 1017) Believe That Jesus
is the Son of God (Acts 837) Repent of Your
Sins (Acts 238) Confess That Jesus is the Son
of God (Acts 837) Be Baptized for Forgiveness
