What is TxBESS?
  • An initiative of the Texas State Board for
    Educator Certification (SBEC) to implement a
    beginning teacher support system in order to
    increase beginning teacher retention and
    effectiveness, thus increasing student
    achievement and learning

Beginning Teachers Want Support
  • Almost 90 of beginning teachers said they had
    wanted to have a mentor.
  • Beginning teachers said that they wanted
    observation and feedback.
  • Beginning teachers said they most needed support
    in

Mentoring Is a Positive Professional Experience
  • 75 of respondents said that serving as a mentor
    had helped them improve their teaching skills.
  • More than half said it renewed their enthusiasm
    for teaching.
  • More than 85 said they either probably or
    definitely wanted to serve as a mentor again.

Good Teaching Matters
  • Children in Tennessee with the least effective
    teachers three years in a row showed achievement
    gains 54 lower than children with the most
    effective teachers.
  • Students in Dallas with three consecutive
    ineffective teachers had scores that fell from
    the 60th percentile in fourth grade to the 42nd
    percentile in the sixth grade.
