  • Campus evacuation drill scheduled
    for April 14, 2004
  • What building are you from?
  • Do you have your equipment?

Building Alarm Systems
  • Alarms can be activated by the pull station,
    smoke sensors,water flow or error.
  • What happens when the alarm is activated?
  • Audible/visual signals
  • Signal sent to police dispatch
  • Occupants ALWAYS evacuate building
  • Police and/or Fire Department may respond
  • Smoke dampers close
  • Some doors close

Become Familiar With Your Building
  • Do you know where all the exits are?
  • Do you know where the enunciator panel is?
  • Do you know where the stairwells are?
  • Do you know where the designated evacuation area
    is?
  • Do you know your fellow Floor Building Wardens?

What is your role as a Floor Warden?
  • Floor Warden Responsibilities
  • Assist/ensure occupants evacuate building
  • Look in all areas!
  • Keep track of injured, persons moved to the
    stairwell or those that refuse to leave
  • Give information to the Building Warden at
    enunciator or orange cone.
  • Keep evacuated persons out of building until the
    all clear

What is your role as a Building Warden?
  • Building Warden Responsibilities
  • Gather information about building from
    Floor Wardens (use Building Warden Checklist)
  • Ensure all areas have been checked.
  • Calls police and/or transfers information to
    responders by the ORANGE CONE. This
    is the Incident Command Center.

Procedures During Evacuation
Floor Warden Instructions
  • Put on hardhat, vest FW badge
  • Assess problems on your floor. Look for damage,
    injuries, and person who may require evacuation
    assistance.
  • Instruct occupants to evacuate building check
    restrooms
  • Move non-ambulatory persons into exit stairwells
    note exact location and report to Building
    Warden. Assign person to stay, if possible.
  • Do Not use elevators
  • Note if alarm pull stations have been activated
  • Ensure stairwell doors are closed
  • When floor assessment is complete, report to
    alarm enunciator panel (primary meeting location)
    or orange cone and give status report to BW.

Procedures During Evacuation
Building Warden Instructions
  • Put on hard hat, vest and BW badge
  • Notify University Police (ext 2111) that
    evacuation alarm has been activated in your
    building.
  • Report to alarm enunciator panel (primary meeting
    location) to receive FW reports.
  • Ensure all areas have been checked using
    checklist.
  • Go to the orange cone. Campus Police will set up
    the orange cone Incident Command Center. If
    Police do not respond, call ext 2111 and give
    building status report.
  • Status report should include as much information
    as possible including location of alarm
    activation, or existence of injured or trapped
    persons.
  • Use FW to keep evacuees from re-entering the
    building keep evacuees away from building.
  • When building has been cleared, notify evacuees.

Important Items
  • Building must be evacuated
    when alarm goes off
  • If positive it is a false alarm, inform Building
    Warden and Police
  • Do Not Put Yourself at Risk!
  • Evacuations are NEVER perfect just do your best
