Waste whey

• A cheese-making factory may make thousands of
  litres of waste whey a day.
• Whey is rich in protein and sugar.

Whey is made when rennet is added to milk.

Getting rid of the whey

• If waste whey is dumped into a river, bacteria
  feed on it and multiply.
• The bacteria use up oxygen in the water and this
  kills other life (like fish) in the river.
• It makes more sense to convert the whey into
  something useful that can be sold.

Uses for waste whey

• Dried, powdered whey is used as an ingredient in
  processed foods.
• Yeast can ferment sugar in whey to alcohol, to
  make a creamy alcoholic drink.
• Yeast can feed on the whey and then be turned
  into protein-rich cattle food.
