  • Telecoms decline stops
  • DAVID WILDER
  • A modest rebound in telecommunications stocks
pushed the Hong Kong market higher yesterday but
    trade remained depressed.
  • The Hang Seng Index closed 135.21 points, or 0.9
per cent, stronger at 15,061.14 as just HK6.99
    billion of shares changed hands.

14
  • "It was cautious, range-trading though some
    selective stocks stood out," Prudential-Bache
vice-president of equities Michael Liang said.
  • Gains in the telecommunications sector followed
cheaper than expected costs for Italian
    third-generation telephone licences.
  • Celestial Securities research head Herbert Lau
Chung-kwan said "I think it could be positive
for the sector as a whole. All the major markets
in Europe except France have already sold their
licences. That means in the near future there
won't be this overhang over telecoms."

  • Stocks down, Nasdaq falls 190 points
  • ASSOCIATED PRESS
  • Stocks fell sharply Wednesday, pulling the Nasdaq
composite index down 190 points, as disappointing
revenue figures from Nortel Networks reawakened
    the market's worries about earnings.
  • Nasdaq fell 190.20, or nearly 5.6 per cent, to
    3,229.59.
  • The Dow Jones industrial average, which
    alternated between positive and negative
territory throughout the day, closed down 66.59,
or 0.6 per cent, at 10,326.48. The Standard and
Poor's 500 index fell 33.23, or 2.4 per cent, to
    1,364.90.

16
  • Investors who had shown signs of relaxing about
earnings reports in the past few sessions proved
they are still nervous about profits, higher
energy costs and an economic slowdown.
  • ''They keep getting blindsided,'' said Larry
Rice, chief investment officer at Josephthal and
    Co.
  • Analysts, including Rice, said investors should
readjust their outlooks, warning that a
consistent stock rally could take a while.
  • ''It's still not a time to throw caution to the
wind,'' said Rice, who even warned investors
    against bargain hunting.
